The effect of short-term ethanol intoxication in systems implicated in memory and other cognitive functions in rats has been assessed by studying the variation in the karyometry of the neurons in the different layers of the lateral entorhinal cortex. The analysis showed that short-term ethanol consumption produced a reduction in the nuclear area of neurons in layers V and VI, and to a lesser extent, in layers II and III. These results suggest that the deep layers of the entorhinal cortex are more sensitive to ethanol intoxication, thus more likely affecting cortical and subcortical projections than the hippocampal output.

Prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) is associated with long-term neurodevelopmental deficits resulting in impaired executive functioning and motor control. Intriguingly, PAE has been linked with an increased risk of transient systemic hypoxia-ischemia (TSHI), which alone results in suboptimal fetal growth and neurodevelopmental consequences. Here, using two translationally relevant preclinical models, we investigated the short-term and lasting effects of PAE and TSHI on the morphology of the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), a region important in executive function, and tested whether PAE interacts with TSHI to produce a distinct pattern of injury relative to either condition alone.

Exposure to alcohol during pregnancy produces Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders, which in its most severe form is characterized by physical dysmorphology and neurobehavioral alterations. Moderate prenatal alcohol exposure (mPAE) is known to produce deficits in discrimination of spatial locations in adulthood.
