Light governs living functions of ascomycete fungus Neurospora crassa by controlling expression of the genes responsible for differentiation of reproductive structures, synthesis of secondary metabolites and the circadian oscillator activity. Illumination also influences electrogenic processes in cell membrane and the activity and molecular organization of some enzymes. The major but, probably, not the sole photoreceptor pigment in Neurospora cells is WCC, a heterodimeric complex formed by PAS-domain-containing polypeptides WC-1 and WC-2, which are the products of genes white collar-1 and white collar-2. Mutation of any of these genes arrests most of the organism's responses to light. The photoreceptor belongs to a recently discovered vast group of non-homologous light-sensitive proteins, whose molecules bind flavin coenzymes as the photosensor chromophores. The photosignal transduction is started by excitation and photochemical activity of excited FAD molecule non-covalently bound by LOV-domain (a specialized version of PAS-domain) in WC-1 protein. The presence in both WC-1- and WC-2-proteins of "zinc fingers" (the GATA recognizing sequences) suggested that these motives might act as transcription factors. The critical analysis of photoinduction mechanism has shown, however, that promoters of light-sensitive genes do not contain a common cis-acting element, what makes to look for alternative mechanisms underlying photoregulated gene activity.

Background: We report a rare case of fungal keratitis caused by , a filamentous fungus that is widely distributed in soil and graminaceous plants.
Case Presentation: A 40-year-old Mongoloid male patient came to our outpatient clinic with painful swelling of the left eye and redness, after being cut by a tree branch 1 week prior. After examination, the patient was diagnosed with a corneal ulcer of the left eye, and was given levofloxacin eye drops and levofloxacin ophthalmic gel.

Aquilaria malaccensis Lam., an Agarwood-producing tree native to Southeast Asia, secretes oleoresin, a resin with diverse applications, in response to injuries. To explore the role of endosphere microbial communities during Agarwood development, we utilized a metagenomics approach across three stages: non-symptomatic (NC), symptomatic early (IN), and symptomatic mature (IN1).

Background: Organization of the eukaryotic genome is essential for proper function, including gene expression. In metazoans, chromatin loops and Topologically Associated Domains (TADs) organize genes into transcription factories, while chromosomes occupy nuclear territories in which silent heterochromatin is compartmentalized at the nuclear periphery and active euchromatin localizes to the nucleus center. A similar hierarchical organization occurs in the fungus Neurospora crassa where its seven chromosomes form a Rabl conformation typified by heterochromatic centromeres and telomeres independently clustering at the nuclear membrane, while interspersed heterochromatic loci aggregate across Megabases of linear genomic distance to loop chromatin in TAD-like structures.

Circadian rhythms are ∼24-h biological oscillations that enable organisms to anticipate daily environmental cycles, so that they may designate appropriate day/night functions that align with these changes. The molecular clock in animals and fungi consists of a transcription-translation feedback loop, the plant clock is comprised of multiple interlocking feedback-loops, and the cyanobacterial clock is driven by a phosphorylation cycle involving three main proteins. Despite the divergent core clock mechanisms across these systems, all circadian clocks are able to buffer period length against changes in the ambient growth environment, such as temperature and nutrients.

Antifungal resistance, particularly the rise of multidrug-resistance strains, poses a significant public health threat. In this study, the study identifies a novel multidrug-resistance gene, msp-8, encoding a helicase, through experimental evolution with Neurospora crassa as a model. Deletion of msp-8 conferred multidrug resistance in N.
