Mayo Clinic Rochester Hospitals have experienced significant growth in the number of patients requiring the specialized nursing care offered in intermediate care areas (ICAs). To ensure quality nursing care for ICA level patients, a standardized educational program was developed. The Mayo Intermediate Care Area Nurse Internship Program was a tuition-free education program that provided additional knowledge, insights, and skills needed to develop a highly competent ICA nurse. This article will describe how the concept of an ICA nurse internship program was taken from birth of an idea to fruition.

Background: Transcriptomics biomarkers have been widely used to predict mortality in patients with sepsis. However, the association between mRNA levels and outcomes shows substantial variability over the course of sepsis, limiting their predictive performance. We aimed to: (a) identify and validate an mRNA biomarker signature whose association with all-cause intensive care unit (ICU) mortality is consistent at several timepoints; and (b) evaluate how this mRNA signature could be used in association with lactate levels for predictive and prognostic enrichment in sepsis.

After resuscitation from cardiac arrest, most patients receive mechanical ventilation. The oxygenation target that optimizes neurologic outcomes after cardiac arrest is uncertain.

The microfluidic-based point-of-care (POC) diagnostic tool has garnered significant interest in recent years, offering rapid and cost-effective disease detection. There is a growing trend toward integrating microfluidic platforms with biosensors, aligning lab-on-a-chip technologies with POC diagnostic devices. Despite numerous efforts to incorporate biosensors into microfluidic systems, researchers have performed very limited investigations on the stability of biomarker detection when biosensors operate under microfluidic shear flow conditions.

Background: Antibiotic heteroresistance is a common bacterial phenotype characterised by the presence of small resistant subpopulations within a susceptible population. During antibiotic exposure, these resistant subpopulations can be enriched and potentially lead to treatment failure. In this study, we examined the prevalence, misclassification, and clinical effect of heteroresistance in Escherichia coli bloodstream infections for the clinically important antibiotics cefotaxime, gentamicin, and piperacillin-tazobactam.

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a fatal lung disease characterized by excess accumulation of the extracellular matrix (ECM). The role of macrophage-fibroblast crosstalk in lung fibrogenesis is incompletely understood. Here we found that fibroblast growth factor-inducible molecule 14 (Fn14), the receptor for tumor necrosis factor-like weak inducer of apoptosis (TWEAK) is highly induced in myofibroblasts in the lungs of IPF patients and the bleomycin-induced lung fibrosis model.
