Both spatial working memory deficit and disorganization symptoms have been considered significant components of schizophrenic impairment involved with the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the relationships among spatial working memory, psychiatric symptoms including disorganization symptoms, and social functioning in schizophrenia. Fifty clinically stable patients with schizophrenia and 34 healthy controls participated in the study. Patients were rated with the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale and the Rehabilitation Evaluation Hall and Baker. The Advanced Trail Making Test was used to evaluate spatial working memory. Patients demonstrated significantly reduced spatial working memory compared to that of healthy controls. Spatial working memory in patients correlated significantly with social functioning such as self-care skills, community skills and speech disturbance, and with disorganization symptoms. Disorganization symptoms also correlated with these aspects of social functioning. In conclusion it is suggested that both spatial working memory deficit and disorganization symptoms, which are impairments involved with the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex dysfunction, can serve as effective predictors of social functioning.

Diabetic retinopathy is a major ocular complication of diabetes, characterized by progressive retinal microvascular damage and significant visual impairment in working-age adults. Traditional bulk RNA sequencing offers overall gene expression profiles but does not account for cellular heterogeneity. Single-cell RNA sequencing overcomes this limitation by providing transcriptomic data at the individual cell level and distinguishing novel cell subtypes, developmental trajectories, and intercellular communications.

How are arbitrary sequences of verbal information retained and manipulated in working memory? Increasing evidence suggests that serial order in verbal WM is spatially coded and that spatial attention is involved in access and retrieval. Based on the idea that brain areas controlling spatial attention are also involved in oculomotor control, we used eye tracking to reveal how the spatial structure of serial order information is accessed in verbal working memory. In two experiments, participants memorized a sequence of auditory words in the correct order.

Flat bands have empowered novel phenomena such as robust canalization with strong localization, high-collimation and low-loss propagation. However, the spatial symmetry protection in photonic or acoustic lattices naturally forces flat bands to manifest in pairs aligned at an inherently specific angle, resulting in a fixed bidirectional canalization.
