Motile microorganisms such as the green Euglena gracilis use a number of external stimuli to orient in their environment. They respond to light with photophobic responses, photokinesis and phototaxis, all of which can result in accumulations of the organisms in suitable habitats. The light responses operate synergistically with gravitaxis, aerotaxis and other responses.

Magnetotactic bacteria (MTB) can rapidly relocate to optimal habitats by magneto-aerotaxis. Little is known about MTB phototaxis, a response that might also aid navigation. In this study, we analyzed the relationship between phototaxis and magnetotaxis in Magnetospirillum magneticum strain AMB-1.

Theodor Wilhelm Engelmann (1843-1909), who had a creative life in music, muscle physiology, and microbiology, developed a sensitive method for tracing the photosynthetic oxygen production of unicellular plants by means of bacterial aerotaxis (chemotaxis). He discovered the absorption spectrum of bacteriopurpurin (bacteriochlorophyll a) and the scotophobic response, photokinesis, and photosynthesis of purple bacteria.

Energy taxis encompasses aerotaxis, phototaxis, redox taxis, taxis to alternative electron acceptors, and chemotaxis to oxidizable substrates. The signal for this type of behavior is originated within the electron transport system. Energy taxis was demonstrated, as a part of an overall behavior, in several microbial species, but it did not appear as the dominant determinant in any of them.
