Tocochromanols (tocopherols and tocotrienols) are important lipophilic antioxidants for animals and humans. Their biological activity is expressed as vitamin E activity. This article describes the current need for vitamin E production, and compares different strategies to engineer the vitamin E content in photosynthetic bacteria and plants, with a focus on oilseed as target tissues. The current status of biotechnological advances in tocochromanol pathway engineering is summarized, and current limitations in our understanding of the tocochromanol biosynthetic pathway are discussed.

Human β-defensin (HBD) has been recognized as a promising antimicrobial agent due to its broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against various pathogens. In our previous work, we engineered a chimeric human β-defensin, designated H4, by fusing human β-defensin 3 and human β-defensin 4, resulting in enhanced antimicrobial activity and salt stability. However, the high cost of chemical synthesis due to the relatively large number of amino acids in H4 has limited its applications.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by cognitive decline and memory loss. A critical aspect of AD pathology is represented by oxidative stress, which significantly contributes to neuronal damage and death. Microglia and astrocytes, the primary glial cells in the brain, are crucial for managing oxidative stress and supporting neuronal function.

Bacterial luciferase (LuxAB) catalyzes the conversion of reduced flavin mononucleotide (FMNH⁻), oxygen, and a long-chain aldehyde to oxidized FMN, the corresponding acid and water with concomitant light emission. This bioluminescence reaction requires the reaction of a flavin reductase such as LuxG (in vivo partner of LuxAB) to supply FMNH⁻ for the LuxAB reaction. LuxAB is a well-known self-sufficient luciferase system because both aldehyde and FMNH⁻ substrates can be produced by the associated enzymes encoded by the genes in the lux operon, allowing the system to be auto-luminous.

This study explores the therapeutic potential of targeting fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH), the major enzyme degrading AEA, in mouse models of amyloidosis (APP/PS1 and Tg2576). Enhancing AEA signaling by genetic deletion of FAAH delayed cognitive deficits in APP/PS1 mice and improved cognitive symptoms in 12-month-old AD-like mice.

Mycosporine-like amino acids are water-soluble secondary metabolites that protect photosynthetic microorganisms from ultraviolet radiation. Here, we present direct evidence for the production of these compounds in surface scums of cyanobacteria along the Baltic Sea coast. We collected 59 environmental samples from the southern coast of Finland during the summers of 2021 and 2022 and analysed them using high-resolution liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry.
