Laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) is a common and popular procedure that is generally associated with excellent results and few complications. We present 3 cases of unusual LASIK-related complications. In the first case, the patient developed anisocoria after otherwise unremarkable surgery. In the second case, the patient developed mild eyelid ptosis. In the third case, the patient's exotropia resolved after mild refractive overcorrection. In each case, the visual outcome was excellent and no further intervention was necessary.

In this study, we attempt to illustrate fossil vertebrate dental tissue geochemistry and, by inference, its extent of diagenetic alteration, using quantitative, semi-quantitative and optical tools to evaluate bioapatite preservation. We present visual comparisons of elemental compositions in fish and plesiosaur dental remains ranging in age from Silurian to Cretaceous, based on a combination of micro-scale optical cathodoluminescence (CL) observations (optical images and scanning electron microscope) with minor, trace and rare earth element (REE) compositions (EDS, maps and REE profiles), as a tool for assessing diagenetic processes and biomineral preservation during fossilization of vertebrate dental apatite. Tissue-selective REE values have been obtained using laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS), indicating areas of potential REE enrichment, combined with cathodoluminescence (CL) analysis.

The Midas Touch by Iridium: A Second Near-Infrared Aggregation-Induced Emission-Active Metallo-Agent for Exceptional Phototheranostics of Breast Cancer.

J Am Chem Soc

January 2025

Center for AIE Research, Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of New Energy Materials Service Safety, College of Materials Science and Engineering, Shenzhen University, Shenzhen 518060, P. R. China.

Developing small organic molecular phototheranostic agents with second near-infrared (NIR-II) aggregation-induced emission (AIE) is paramount for the phototriggered diagnostic imaging and synchronous in situ therapy of cancer via an excellent balance of the excited states energy dissipations. In this study, a multifunctional iridium(III) complex is exploited by the coordination of an AIE-active N^N ancillary ligand with a trivalent iridium ion. The resultant complex DPTPzIr significantly outperforms its parent ligand in terms of absorption/emission wavelengths, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, and photothermal conversion, which simultaneously endow DPTPzIr nanoparticles with matched absorption peak to commercial 808 nm laser, the longest NIR-II emission peak (above 1100 nm) among those previously reported AIE iridium(III) complexes, potentiated type-I ROS generation, and as high as 60.

Stability of refractive outcomes after hyperopic LASIK with and without Mitomycin C application: a randomized controlled trial.

Sci Rep

January 2025

Department of Ophthalmology, Medical Faculty, University Hospital Düsseldorf, Heinrich Heine University, Moorenstraße 5, 40225, Dusseldorf, Germany.

To assess the efficacy, safety, and stability of refractive outcomes in hyperopic Laser-Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis (LASIK) with and without the application of Mitomycin C (MMC). This randomized, parallel group, controlled multicenter trial included 140 hyperopic eyes. The participants were randomly assigned to two groups: one receiving LASIK with mitomycin C (MMC) (n = 70) and the other receiving LASIK without MMC (n = 70).

Herein, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNT) embedded with RuPdIrPtAu-high entropy alloys (HEA) via pulsed laser irradiation in liquids are successfully fabricated. The resultant composite synergistically enhances hydrazine oxidation reaction (HzOR)-boosted water electrolysis. Notably, HEA with ≈2-5 nm size, are uniformly distributed across the surface of the CNTs.

Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is a rapidly evolving in-situ multi-element analysis technique that has significantly advanced the field of liquid analysis. This study employs a femtosecond laser for quantitative analysis of heavy metals in flowing liquids, exploring its detection sensitivity and accuracy. Femtosecond pulsed laser excitation of water in a dynamic environment generates plasma while effectively preventing liquid splashing.
