In order to determine whether imatinib mesylate (Gleevec), a tyrosine kinase inhibitor that binds the CD-117 (c-kit) receptor, may be of value in the treatment of malignant melanoma, an immunohistochemical analysis of 40 cases of primary and metastatic melanoma was undertaken. Thirty-five of the 40 cases showed 1+ or stronger labelling for CD-117 (up to a maximum of 4+). Three patients with neoplasms showing 4+ staining were selected for imatinib therapy. None responded. c-kit (CD-117) expression in melanoma appears to be common; however, the value of imatinib therapy remains to be proven.

Background: Odontogenic lesions contain mast cells (MCs), particularly those with a cystic appearance. Because of their high recurrence rates and aggressive clinical behaviour, odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs) require special treatment. A particular kind of protein called cluster of differentiation (CD) 117/ receptor tyrosine kinase (c-KIT) is present on the surface of many cells.

Background: Renal cell carcinoma is the most lethal urological cancer and contributes significantly to morbidity and mortality due to cancers of the urogenital tract. In routine diagnostic surgical pathology practice of renal tumours, immunohistochemistry is a helpful ancillary technique after routine H & E. The role of renal immunohistochemistry is explored in this study.

A gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) is a rare malignancy, accounting for only 0.1% to 3% of all gastrointestinal (GI) malignancies. Although GISTs are the most common mesenchymal tumor of the GI tract, they are primarily found within the stomach, with rectal GISTs rarely reported.

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are rare tumors of the digestive tract, often found incidentally on imaging. Although these tumors possess malignant potential, splenic encapsulation has not yet been described in the literature. A 74-year-old male fell and suffered blunt abdominal trauma followed by a 20-pound weight loss, early satiety, and left-sided abdominal pain.

Article Synopsis
  • Primary cutaneous adenoid cystic carcinoma (PCACC) is a rare and complex skin cancer first identified in 1975, which can be easily mistaken for other skin tumors like melanoma and Merkel cell carcinoma.
  • Diagnosing PCACC requires detailed examination using both standard tissue staining and special immunohistochemical markers.
  • A case study of a 31-year-old patient shows successful surgical treatment of a scalp tumor, achieving good cosmetic results after complete resection.
