A reagent-free microwave-assisted decarboxylation procedure for carboxylic acid functionalized bicyclic 2-pyridones has been developed. This new method, based on microwave heating at 220 degrees C for 600 seconds in N-methyl pyrrolidone (NMP), proved to be practical and very efficient, resulting in decarboxylated 2-pyridones in near-quantitative yields. The decarboxylated products and the intermediate 2-pyridones in the form of carboxylic acid methyl esters and carboxylic acids were screened for their effect on Abeta-peptide aggregation. Two out of the 21 2-pyridones described in this study inhibited amyloid formation of the Alzheimer Abeta(1-40) peptide. The effect was seen even at a 4 : 1 ratio of 2-pyridone and monomeric Abeta-peptide.

Copper-free synthesis of cationic glycidyl triazolyl polymers (GTPs) is achieved through a thermal azide-alkyne cycloaddition reaction between glycidyl azide polymer and propiolic acid, followed by decarboxylation and quaternization of the triazole unit. For synthesizing nonfunctionalized GTP (GTP-H), a microwave-assisted method enhances the decarboxylation reaction of carboxy-functionalized GTP (GTP-COOH). Three variants of cationic GTPs with different N-substituents [N-ethyl, N-butyl, and N-tri(ethylene glycol) monomethyl ether (EG3)] are synthesized.

The development of selective extraction protocols for -inflorescence constituents is still a significant challenge. The characteristic fragrance can be mainly ascribed to monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes and oxygenated terpenoids. This work investigates the entrapment of terpenes in olive oil from inflorescences via stripping under mild vacuum during the rapid microwave-assisted decarboxylation of cannabinoids (MW, 120 °C, 30 min) and after subsequent extraction of cannabinoids (60 and 100 °C).

Efficient determination of antioxidant activity in medicinal plants may provide added value to extracts. The effects of postharvest pre-freezing and drying [microwave-assisted hot air (MAHD) and freeze drying] on hops and cannabis were evaluated to determine the relationship between antioxidant activity and secondary metabolites. The 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazine (DPPH) reduction and ferric reducing ability of power (FRAP) assays were assessed for suitability in estimating the antioxidant activity of extracted hops and cannabis inflorescences and correlation with cannabinoid and terpene content.

Glaucoma is a widespread neurodegenerative disease for which increased intraocular pressure (IOP) is a primary modifiable risk factor. Recently, we have observed that compounds with oxindole scaffolds are involved in the regulation of intraocular pressure and therefore have potential antiglaucomic activity.
