Objectives: To comparatively evaluate the impact of a balanced one-third dose-reduced oral contraceptive on hemostatic variables.
Methods: In an open-label, randomized study, a dose-reduced oral contraceptive containing 20 microg of ethinylestradiol (EE) and 100 microg of levonorgestrel (LNG) was compared with a reference preparation containing 30 microg of EE and 150 microg of LNG. One-year data were obtained from 48 volunteers.
Results: The direction and magnitude of the changes (increase or decrease) in most of the hemostatic variables were similar in both treatment groups. The majority of changes of all investigated variables remained within the reference ranges of variation. The procoagulatory variables increased to some extent from baseline to treatment cycle 13, while the anticoagulatory variables slightly decreased. In particular, thrombin turnover measured by prothrombin fragments 1+2 increased during treatment by 35% in the 20 microg of EE group and by 38% in the 30 microg of EE group. Statistically significant differences between the two treatment groups were found only for TAT. For the profibrinolytic variables, plasminogen was increased by 42% (20 microg of EE) and 49% (30 microg of EE). While the plasma levels of tPA antigen were reduced during treatment, the levels of its activity were increased by 54% (20 microg of EE) and 20% (30 microg of EE). For PAI, both antigen and activity were decreased, somewhat more pronounced with 20 microg of EE. D-Dimer remained virtually unchanged. Finally, the median FbDP levels were elevated by 30% (20 microg of EE) and 38% (30 microg of EE).

Many simulated micro-gravity (micro-G) experiments on earth suggest that micro-G conditions are not compatible with early mammalian embryo development. Recently, the first two "space embryo" studies have been published showing that early mouse embryo development can occur in real microgravity (real micro-G) conditions in orbit. In the first of these studies, published in 2020, Lei and collaborators developed automated mini-incubator (AMI) devices for mouse embryos facilitating cultivation, microscopic observation, and fixation.

This study investigates food odour perception and affective response within a virtually simulated spacecraft environment, with links to the volatile composition of odours. Healthy participants (n = 44) between the ages of 18-39 years rated the intensity of eight food odours in two simulated space environments for comparison, a 'microgravity' posture (MicroG Posture; physical) and Virtual Reality (VR; visual-spatial cues) simulation of a spacecraft. Results indicate that these methods yield different outcomes.

Background: The aim of this study was to validate in 20-year follow-up (FU) the outcomes reported in World J Surg 2010; 34(6):1232-8 on recurrent nodular goiter in the contralateral thyroid lobe among patients after thyroid lobectomy (TL) for multinodular goiter (MNG) receiving versus not receiving postoperative prophylactic levothyroxine (LT4) treatment.
Methods: Some 150 consenting patients underwent TL for MNG in 2000-2003. They were randomized to two groups, 75 patients each: (a) receiving prophylactic LT4 treatment postoperatively (dose range 75-125 microg/day to maintain thyroid-stimulating hormone values within 0.

G protein-coupled estrogen receptor 1 (GPER-1) has gained recognition for its role in conferring cardioprotection. However, the extent to which GPER-1 exerts equally important effects in both sexes remains unclear. The study found similar expressions of GPER-1 in rat heart apex in both sexes.
