Article Abstract

In this paper we report a combined experimental and theoretical study on the dynamics of the insertion reaction C((1)D)+D(2) at 15.5 kJ mol(-1) collision energy. Product angular and velocity distributions have been obtained in crossed beam experiments and quasiclassical trajectory (QCT) and rigorous statistical calculations have been performed on the recent and accurate ab initio potential energy surface of Bussery-Honvault, Honvault, and Launay at the energy of the experiment. The molecular-beam results have been simulated using the theoretical calculations. Good agreement between experiment and both QCT and statistical predictions is found.

Full-dimensional accurate potential energy surface and dynamics for the unimolecular isomerization reaction CH3NC ⇌ CH3CN.

J Chem Phys

January 2025

School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering and Chongqing Key Laboratory of Chemical Theory and Mechanism, Chongqing University, Chongqing 401331, China.

The reaction CH3NC ⇌ CH3CN, a model reaction for the study of unimolecular isomerization, is important in astronomy and atmospheric chemistry and has long been studied by numerous experiments and theories. In this work, we report the first full-dimensional accurate potential energy surface (PES) of this reaction by the permutation invariant polynomial-neural network method based on 30 974 points, whose energies are calculated at the CCSD(T)-F12a/AVTZ level. Then, ring polymer molecular dynamics is used to derive the free energy barrier of the reaction at the experimental temperature range of 472.

Molecular Dynamics of the Davies Ambimodal C-H Functionalization/Cope Rearrangement Reaction.

J Org Chem

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, University of California, Los Angeles, California 90095, United States.

The mechanism of the dirhodium-catalyzed combined C-H functionalization/Cope rearrangement (CH/Cope) reaction discovered by the Davies group has been investigated with density functional theory (DFT) calculations and quasi-classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Computations from the Davies group previously showed that there is a post-transition state bifurcation leading to a direct CH reaction and also to the CH/Cope product. While this work was in preparation, the Tantillo group and the Ess group independently reported quantum mechanical and molecular dynamics studies on the dirhodium-tetracarboxylate-catalyzed diazoester CH/Cope and CH insertion reactions with 1,3-cyclohexadiene and 1,4-cyclohexadiene, respectively.

Dynamics of HCN, HNC, and HNCO Formation in the 193 nm Photodissociation of Formamide.

J Phys Chem A

September 2024

Chemical Sciences and Engineering Division, Argonne National Laboratory, Lemont, Illinois 60439, United States.

Formamide (NHCHO) is the simplest molecule containing a peptide linkage [-NH-C(═O)-], and it plays an essential role in the study of prebiotic chemistry. Exposure to UV irradiation allows formamide to decompose and act as a prebiotic feedstock in the formation of nucleobases and other necessary starting materials. The photodissociation mechanism of gaseous formamide at 193 nm is studied using (a) chirped-pulse Fourier transform millimeter-wave spectroscopy in the 260-290 GHz spectral region in a room-temperature flow-tube reactor at 1 μbar pressure, (b) a combination of electronic structure theory, transition state theory, and quasiclassical trajectories, and (c) the Active Thermochemical Tables.

High-Energy Reaction Dynamics of N.

J Phys Chem A

October 2024

Department of Chemistry, University of Basel, Klingelbergstrasse 80, CH-4056 Basel, Switzerland.

The atom-exchange and atomization dissociation dynamics for the N(S) + N(Σ) reaction are studied using a reproducing kernel Hilbert space (RKHS)-based, global potential energy surface (PES) at the MRCI-F12/aug-cc-pVTZ-F12 level of theory (MRCI, multireference configuration interaction). For the atom exchange reaction (NN + N → NN + N), computed thermal rates and their temperature dependence from quasi-classical trajectory (QCT) simulations agree to within error bars with the available experiments. Companion QCT simulations using a recently published CASPT2-based PES confirm these findings.

Controlling the outcome of chemical reactions by exciting specific vibrational and/or rotational modes of the reactants is one of the major goals of modern reaction dynamics studies. In the present Perspective, we focus on first-principles vibrational and rotational mode-specific dynamics computations on reactions of neutral and anionic systems beyond six atoms such as X + CH [X = F, Cl, OH], HX + CH [X = Br, I], OH + CHI, and F + CHCHCl. The dynamics simulations utilize high-level analytical potential energy surfaces and the quasi-classical trajectory method.
