The structure of heat-set systems of the globular protein bovine serum albumin (BSA) was investigated at pH 7 in different salt conditions (NaCl or CaCl(2)) using light scattering. Cross-correlation dynamic light scattering was used to correct for multiple scattering from turbid samples. After heat treatment, aggregates are formed whose size increases as the protein concentration increases. Beyond a critical concentration that decreases with increasing salt concentration, gels are formed. The heterogeneity and the reduced turbidity of the gels were found to increase with increasing salt concentration and to decrease with increasing protein concentration. The structure of the gels is determined by the strength of the repulsive electrostatic interactions between the aggregated proteins. The results obtained in NaCl are similar to those reported in previous studies for other globular proteins. CaCl(2) was found to be much more efficient in reducing electrostatic interactions than NaCl at the same ionic strength.

Electroosmosis reduces the available energy from ion transport arising due to concentration gradients across ion-exchange membranes. This work builds on previous efforts to describe the electroosmosis, the permselectivity and the apparent transport number of a membrane, and we show new measurements of concentration cells with the Selemion CMVN cation-exchange membrane and single-salt solutions of HCl, LiCl, NaCl, MgCl, CaCl and NHCl. Ionic transport numbers and electroosmotic water transport relative to the membrane are efficiently obtained from a relatively new permselectivity analysis method.

NaCl and CaCl are commonly used edible salts in food. The synergistic influences of these two salts on the physicochemical properties of whey protein isolate-carrageenan (WPI-Car) complexes were investigated in relation to their foaming and emulsifying properties. The results showed that as the ratio of NaCl: CaCl decreased from 6:0 to 3:3, the turbidity of the complexes increased from 0.

Background: Calcium-mediated autonomic denervation has been shown to suppress postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF) after coronary artery bypass grafting.
Objectives: This study sought to evaluate whether similar autonomic denervation can prevent POAF after mitral or aortic valve surgeries.
Methods: This research consisted of 2 single-center, randomized, double-blind, sham-controlled trials: CAP-AF2 (Calcium Autonomic Denervation Prevents Postoperative Atrial Fibrillation in Patients Undergoing Isolated Mitral Valve Surgery for Mitral Regurgitation) for mitral valve (MV) surgery and CAP-AF3 (Calcium Autonomic Denervation Prevents Postoperative Atrial Fibrillation in Patients Undergoing Isolated Aortic Valve Surgery) for aortic valve surgery.

In this paper, the enhancement of thermochemical energy storage by alkali metal chloride salts-doped Ca-based sorbents is revealed by experiments and DFT calculations. The results indicate that NaCl and KCl doping increases the reaction rate and cycle stability. Compared to CaO, the conversion of NaCl-CaO and KCl-CaO after one cycle is increased by 59.
