Ovulation rates were measured in 547 progeny of 24 rams in a Romney flock with a long history of high prolificacy. These sheep were from the same family line and the distribution of ovulation rates suggests the presence of a segregating major gene (FecW) that increases prolificacy. The phenotype differs from those previously described for major genes affecting prolificacy in sheep. The putative gene shows autosomal inheritance and one copy increases ovulation rate by 0.8-1.0 eggs per ewe ovulating. To date, we have found no evidence of infertility among putative homozygous ewes, as described in some autosomal major genes for prolificacy.

In middle-aged (MA) female rats, we have demonstrated that intrahypothalamic gene therapy for insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) extends the regular cyclicity of the animals beyond 10 months (the age at which MA rats stop ovulating). Here, we implemented long-term OSKM gene therapy in the hypothalamus of young female rats. The main goal was to extend fertility in the treated animals.

We investigated whether microalgae or linseed supply during the early postpartum period affects ovarian restimulation and supports the first postpartum ovulation in lactating anovulatory goats. Thirty-eight An-glo-Nubian-crossbred adult goats were allocated into three groups, one with a control diet ( = 12), fed a total mixed ration (TMR) comprising chopped elephant grass and concentrate; an algal diet ( = 13), fed TMR + green microalgae (1% dry matter); and a linseed diet ( = 13), TMR + linseed (12% dry matter). Supplements were furnished from the second to fifth week (time of weaning).
