Association between TRAIL expression on peripheral blood lymphocytes and liver damage in chronic hepatitis B. | LitMetric

Aim: To explore a novel mechanism for tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL), upregulation of CD4(+) and CD8(+) T lymphocytes participating in the patho-physiological process of chronic hepatitis B (CHB).

Methods: The levels of serum soluble TRAIL (sTRAIL), serum IFN-gamma and membrane-bound TRAIL expression on peripheral leucocytes from 58 CHB patients were examined by ELISA and flow cytometry respectively. The levels of TRAIL were compared with the baseline levels of 17 healthy controls, and correlation analysis was performed between ALT, TBIL, PT, morphological change in hepatic tissues, and serum IFN-gamma.

Results: The results showed that TRAIL levels on membranes of CD4(+), CD8(+) T cells in CHB patients were much higher than those in healthy controls (P<0.001), and were correlated with serum TBIL (r = 0.354, P = 0.008 for CD4(+) and r = 0.522, P = 0.000 for CD8(+), respectively), ALT (r = 0.393, P = 0.003 for CD8(+)), PT (r = 0.385, P = 0.004 for CD8(+)) and serum IFN-gamma level (r = 0.302, P = 0.011 for CD4(+) and r = 0.307, P = 0.009 for CD8(+)). On the contrary to membrane-bound TRAIL expression, serum level of sTRAIL was not correlated with that of TBIL and PT, though it was higher than that of the normal population and was positively correlated with serum HBeAg expression (r = 0.695, P = 0.001).

Conclusion: The expression level of TRAIL on the membrane of lymphocytes was upregulated and associated with the liver injury in CHB patients. These findings suggest that upregulation of TRAIL expression may be induced by virus antigen and inflammatory cytokine IFN-gamma.

Temporal RAGE Over-Expression Disrupts Lung Development by Modulating Apoptotic Signaling.

Curr Issues Mol Biol

Department of Cell Biology and Physiology, Brigham Young University, 3054 Life Sciences Building, Provo, UT 84602, USA.

Receptors for advanced glycation end products (RAGE) are multiligand cell surface receptors found most abundantly in lung tissue. This study sought to evaluate the role of RAGE in lung development by using a transgenic (TG) mouse model that spatially and temporally controlled RAGE overexpression. Histological imaging revealed that RAGE upregulation from embryonic day (E) 15.

Research on the links between intimate relationships and PTSD and the treatments for PTSD tend to be limited to couples in which only one partner within the dyad has PTSD. No investigations, to our knowledge, have empirically examined the simultaneous provision of evidence-based PTSD treatment to both partners in an intimate relationship diagnosed with PTSD. The current case study describes two partners in a different-sex relationship, both diagnosed with current PTSD, who received individual Prolonged Exposure (PE) therapy at the same time as part of a larger randomized clinical trial.

Lipolysis-stimulated lipoprotein receptor (LSR), a lipid metabolism-related factor localized in tricellular tight junctions (tTJs), plays an important role in maintaining the epithelial homeostasis. LSR is highly expressed in well-differentiated cancers, and its expression decreases during malignancy. The LSR antibody inhibits cell growth and promotes apoptosis in some cancers.

Linking Genome-Wide Association Studies to Pharmacological Treatments for Psychiatric Disorders.

JAMA Psychiatry

December 2024

The Turner Institute for Brain and Mental Health, School of Psychological Sciences, and Monash Biomedical Imaging, Monash University, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.

Importance: Large-scale genome-wide association studies (GWAS) should ideally inform the development of pharmacological treatments, but whether GWAS-identified mechanisms of disease liability correspond to the pathophysiological processes targeted by current pharmacological treatments is unclear.

Objective: To investigate whether functional information from a range of open bioinformatics datasets can elucidate the relationship between GWAS-identified genetic variation and the genes targeted by current treatments for psychiatric disorders.

Design, Setting, And Participants: Associations between GWAS-identified genetic variation and pharmacological treatment targets were investigated across 4 psychiatric disorders-attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and major depressive disorder.
