The Caribbean King Crab, Damithrax spinosissimus is a fishery resource, but few biological studies are available. Its patchy distribution, and the high environmental heterogeneity due to the oceanographic, landscape, and ecological characteristics of the Caribbean Sea, can favor the phenotypic variability according to the geographic origin. For this reason, the objective of our study was to determine morphometic variability in the carapace of the crabs from three Southwestern Caribbean islands: Providence, Rosario and San Bernardo.

Ontogenetic changes in the morphology and morphometry of Cuban gar (Atractosteus tristoechus).

Zoolog Sci

December 2010

Centro de Investigaciones Marinas, Universidad de la Habana, Playa, La Habana, Cuba.

Detailed examination of early development and growth of Cuban gar (Atractosteus tristoechus) was conducted using morphologic and morphometric characters. Larvae were reared at a constant water temperature (28 ± 1°C) from hatching to 18 days after hatching (DAH). Observation of the disappearance, reduction, or appearance of external structures, pigment characteristics, and behavior, identified three developmental stages (attached 0-3 DAH; transitional 4-10 DAH; and free-swimming 11-18 DAH).

The neurohormone, [His(7)]-corazonin is known to induce dark color in the cuticle and epidermis of Locusta migratoria. In the present study, we examined the effects of this hormone on development and morphometrics in two strains, albino and normal, of this locust under isolated conditions. Injection of [His(7)]-corazonin induced dark color in both strains.
