Fetal extradural hematoma: prenatal diagnosis and postmortem examination.

Fetal Diagn Ther

Service de Radiologie A, Hôpital Pellegrin, CHR Bordeaux, Bordeaux, France.

Published: September 2005

We report the 1st confirmed case of an extradural hematoma diagnosed in utero by ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging at 31 weeks' gestation. No signs of intracranial hemorrhage were found. During pregnancy, the expecting mother suffered from sustained cough, and a blood sample test revealed acute pertussis. The presence of fetal hydrocephaly, brain parenchymal deviation, and other abnormalities suggested a poor outcome, and based on these findings pregnancy termination was recommended and carried out. Postmortem examination confirmed the diagnosis of an extradural hematoma in the posterior fossa.

Traumatic aneurysms represent less than 1 percent of intracranial aneurysms and middle meningeal artery pseudoaneurysms are even rare. Traumatic aneurysms are usually pseudoaneurysms formed by the rupture of all the layers of the vessel wall. They are associated with high mortality as they can present as epidural, subdural, and rarely intraparenchymal hematoma.

Acute epidural hematoma is one of the most serious traumatic conditions in neurosurgery, for which emergency surgery may be indicated. Injury to the middle meningeal artery (MMA) is generally the cause of hemorrhage, often accompanied by convexity fractures resulting from head trauma. However, an epidural hematoma by a contusion of the jaw is very rare.

Spontaneous epidural hematoma (EDH) is a rare sickle cell disease (SCD) complication. We report 3 pediatric cases with SCD and spontaneous EDH and 1 with subgaleal hematomas in the setting of vaso-occlusive crises and elaborate on their presentation and management. Through a scoping review, we identified 71 additional cases reported from 1970 to 2024 and highlighted notable features.

A Retrospective Study on Subgaleal Fluid Collection After Titanium Mesh and Polyetheretherketone Cranioplasty.

World Neurosurg

December 2024

Department of Neurosurgery, The Seventh Affiliated Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University, Shenzhen, China. Electronic address:

Objective: Cranioplasty is a common neurosurgical procedure aimed at providing structural protection to cerebral tissues and enhancing neurological function. The choice of implant material, particularly polyetheretherketone (PEEK) and titanium mesh, significantly influences postoperative outcomes, including the incidence of subgaleal fluid collections (SFC). This study investigates the incidence of SFC associated with PEEK and titanium mesh in cranioplasty, identifying risk factors and implications for clinical practice.
