In our previous study (Woo, K. K., et al., Biosci. Biotechnol. Biochem., 68, 2547-2556 (2004), we purified an alpha-mannosidase from Ginkgo biloba seeds; it was activated by cobalt ions and highly active towards high-mannose type free N-glycans occurring in plant cells. In the present study, we have found that the substrate specificity of Ginkgo alpha-mannosidase is significantly regulated by cobalt ions. When pyridylamino derivative of Man9GlcNAc2 (M9A) was incubated with Ginkgo alpha-mannosidase in the absence of cobalt ions, Man5GlcNAc2-PA (M5A) having no alpha1-2 mannosyl residue was obtained as a major product. On the other hand, when Man9GlcNAc2-PA was incubated with alpha-mannosidase in the presence of Co2+ (1 mM), Man3-1GlcNAc2-PA were obtained as major products releasing alpha1-3/6 mannosyl residues in addition to alpha1-2 mannosyl residues. The structures of the products (Man8-5GlcNAc2-PA) derived from M9A by enzyme digestion in the absence of cobalt ions were the same as those in the presence of cobalt ions. These results clearly suggest that the trimming pathway from M9A to M5A is not affected by the addition of cobalt ions, but that hydrolytic activity towards alpha1-3/6 mannosyl linkages is stimulated by Co2+. Structural analysis of the products also showed clearly that Ginkgo alpha-mannosidase can produce truncated high-mannose type N-glycans, found in developing or growing plant cells, suggesting that alpha-mannosidase might be involved in the degradation of high-mannose type free N-glycans.

Nickel-rich cobalt-free layered oxide cathode with Ni contents no fewer than 90 % has received extensive attention in the field of lithium-ion batteries due to its excellent specific capacity and low cost, but serious capacity degeneration induced by structural deterioration and interfacial instability greatly hamper their further development. Herein, the Sb-modified LiNiMnO materials from the interface to interior have been designed and fabricated to overcome the above issues. On the one hand, the introduction of Sb-ion in interior of grains can generate Sb-O chemical bond with high dissociation energy, which contributes to reinforce the chemical and structural stability.

Nanotherapy has emerged as a promising strategy for the targeted and efficient treatment of melanoma, the most aggressive and lethal form of skin cancer, with minimized systemic toxicity. However, the therapeutic efficacy of cobalt oxide nanoparticles (CoONPs) in melanoma treatment remains unexplored. This study aimed to assess the therapeutic potential of CoONPs in melanoma treatment by evaluating their impact on cell viability, genomic DNA and mitochondrial integrity, reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and apoptosis induction in melanoma A-375 cells.

In this study, we focused on the mechanism of the electrocatalytic oxidation of thiocyanate, which in traditional electrodes typically requires high overpotentials. As models for reducing these overpotentials and catalyzing the reaction, we used a set of modified cobalt phthalocyanines (CoPc), known as electrocatalysts. Using DFT calculations, we explored how modifications to CoPc by adding electron-donating and withdrawing groups and the coordination of 4-amino thiophenol impact the oxidation process.

Electrocatalysis in metal-organic frameworks is an interplay between the diffusion of charges, the intrinsic catalytic rate, and the mass-transport of reactants through the pores. Here a systematic study is carried out to investigate the role of the electrolyte nature and concentration on the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) with the PCN-224(Co) MOF in aqueous electrolyte. It was found that the ORR activity is slightly influenced by the nature of the ions in solution, providing that the ionic strength is high enough to minimize the resistivity during the measurement.

The presence of cobalt ions (Co) and radionuclides (Co) in industrial and radioactive effluents pose serious threats to environmental ecosystems and human health. This paper presents the synthesis of dual-functional hydroxyapatite (HAp)-incorporated spherical carbon (SC) composite (HAp/SC) towards the selective adsorption of cobalt from wastewater and the utilization of the Co-adsorbed HAp/SC composite (Co- HAp/SC) as an electrocatalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, we prepared a series of HAp/SC composites by varying HAp weight percentages of 10 %, 20 %, 30 %, 40 %, and 50 %.
