Article Synopsis
  • Salisb. is a traditional herb used to treat various diseases, including gastric cancer, but its specific effects on gastric cancer cells require further investigation.
  • This study explored how a standardized extract of Salisb. rhizome induces cell death in gastric cancer AGS cells, primarily through apoptosis and cell cycle disruption.
  • The extract's active compounds, curdione and germacrone, were shown to affect mitochondrial function and cell cycle regulatory proteins, highlighting their potential as anti-cancer agents.

Article Synopsis
  • COVID-19 can lead to serious complications like abnormal blood clotting and heart issues, prompting the use of treatments such as antiplatelet and anticoagulant medications, though their effectiveness remains uncertain.
  • Researchers are also exploring anti-inflammatory drugs to combat the immune dysregulation associated with severe COVID-19 symptoms, often referred to as the cytokine storm.
  • Recent patent literature highlights small molecules that could address long-COVID-related complications, focusing on the potential of ramatroban, emricasan, rimeporide, and natural polyphenolic compounds as therapeutic options.

To study the relationship between caspase-1/4 and reperfusion injury, we measured infarct size (IS) in isolated mouse hearts undergoing 50 min global ischemia/2 h reperfusion. Starting VRT-043198 (VRT) at reperfusion halved IS. The pan-caspase inhibitor emricasan duplicated VRT's protection.

Aims: The present study was aimed to investigate the effects of cell death inhibitors including ferroptosis inhibitor, ferrostatin-1 (FER-1) and a pan-caspase inhibitor, z-VAD-FMK on brain parameters and cognitive function in iron-overloaded rats.

Main Methods: Male Wistar rats (n = 30) were divided into 2 groups to receive an intraperitoneal injection with either 10 % dextrose in normal saline solution (NSS) (control group, n = 6) or 100 mg/kg iron dextran (Fe group, n = 24) for 6 weeks. After 4 weeks of injection, Fe-injected rats were subdivided into 4 subgroups (n = 6/subgroup) to subcutaneously receive with 1) vehicle (10 % DMSO in NSS), 2) deferoxamine (25 mg/kg), 3) FER-1 (2 mg/kg), or 4) z-VAD-FMK (1 mg/kg).

Background: Acute myocardial infarction (MI) is considered to be the main cause of congestive heart failure. The aim of this study was to provide an in-depth analysis of athophysiological processes and provide key targets for intervention in the occurrence of acute MI.

Methods: A rat model of MI was established by ligation of left anterior descending branch.
