Recent studies showed marked alterations in type II pneumocyte ultrastructure by streptozotocin-induced diabetes. To see whether other pulmonary epithelium is affected, we examined terminal bronchioles by transmission electron microscopy. Ten adult male rats received one intrajugular injection of streptozotocin (75 mg/kg of body weight) and were killed 14 days later. As control subjects, 5 additional rats received only saline, and 5 rats given streptozotocin injections received protamine zinc insulin (1 unit/rat/day). As compared to lungs of control animals, the bronchiolar epithelial cell type most altered in diabetic rat lungs was the Clara cell. The numbers of ovoid secretory granules decreased significantly (29 of 57 cells were without granules versus 0 of 78 in control animals), and the number of rod-shaped granules increased. Administration of exogenous insulin alleviated the changes. These findings show that the changes in pulmonary metabolic function associated with diabetes mellitus result from alterations not only in granular pneumocytes, but also in nonciliated, bronchiolar secretory epithelial (Clara) cells.

We collected 26 cases of bronchiolar adenoma (BA) and its variants, and performed a comprehensive characterization using a combination of morphological, immunohistochemical, and genetic assessments. Of these 26, 13 were classic bilayered cases, including 10 proximal and 3 distal-type BAs. Of note, we also identified 13 cases that lacked a continuous basal cell layer.

The nine-banded armadillo (Dasypus novemcinctus) is a mammal of the Xenarthra Superorder, which inhabits Central, South and North America. Few morphological descriptions are observed in this species, including the respiratory tract; therefore, the objective of this study was to describe morphologically the lower respiratory tract of the nine-banded armadillo. Five animals were dissected, and the macroscopic and microscopic aspects were analysed.

We report the occurrence of lung cancer in a six months old lamb of Ouled Djellal breed from Algeria. The main clinical sign was a considerable amount of whitish foamy fluid discharge from the nostrils when the animal head was lowered and the rear end was lifted. The post-mortem examination revealed the presence of enlarged, heavy and edematous lungs with diffuse or foci areas, reddish or white-gray in color.
