Surface area exclusion chromatography (SAEC) was employed to determine the stability characteristics of saturated homogeneous layers when interfacial exchange or transfer of molecules was promoted. In these experiments, the first polymer layer was established by elution of a column composed of stacked glass-fiber filters with one polymer. Then, after displacement of the void by water, the second polymer was subsequently injected under the same elution conditions. The experiments combine polymers of equal or different molecular weight and/or hydrolysis grade. Histograms of SAEC experiments demonstrate the great stability of the initially adsorbed layer. Domains of high and low adsorption values were determined to exist along the chromatography column after injection of the first polymer sample. The polymer injected second slightly modifies the initial adsorption histogram and mainly overadsorbs on the low adsorption domain of the first polymer. The major result relates to the relaxation phenomenon affecting or not the second adsorbed polymer when it adsorbs on filters belonging to the low adsorption domain of the polymer first injected. The relaxation is impeded when the relaxation of the first polymer is of great amplitude, whereas it occurs when the relaxation of the first polymer is small.

Clarithromycin, a common antibiotic found in domestic wastewater, persists even after treatment and can transfer to soils when treated wastewater (TWW) is used for irrigation. This residual antibiotic may exert selection pressure, promoting the spread of antibiotic resistance. While Predicted No Effect Concentrations (PNECs) are used in liquid media to predict resistance risks, PNEC values for soils, especially for clarithromycin, are lacking.

With high microporosity, good dispersibility, excellent specific surface area and large content surface functional group, hydrochar demonstrates significant advantages and strong affinity towards pollutants in water. Modification method plays a significant role for anion adsorption by modified hydrochar, layered double hydroxide (LDH) modified hydrocarbons (Mg/Al-LDH@HC-HCl) have been synthesized through a one-step hydrothermal approach and activated with hydrochloric acid in this paper. The physical and chemical characteristics of the hydrochar, both before and after modification, are analyzed using BET, SEM-EDS, TEM, XRD, FTIR, and XPS to explore the phosphate adsorption mechanisms.

Biofiltration for odor mitigation in water resource recovery facilities.

Sci Total Environ

January 2025

Department of Civil Engineering, City College of New York, New York, NY 10031, United States.

Odor emissions, primarily from anthropogenic activities like waste treatment and industrial processes, pose significant challenges in urban areas, particularly near water resource recovery facilities. While these emissions are generally not toxic, they can adversely affect community wellbeing and investment, prompting stricter regulations in some regions. For example, New York State's hydrogen sulfide guidelines are more stringent than federal standards.

Monitoring of p-nitrophenol (PNP) and 3-methyl-4-nitrophenol (PNMC) in human urine and environmental water is of great importance for human health assessment and environmental protection, as they are both urinary metabolites of some poisonous pesticides and priority environmental pollutants. However, efficient extraction of trace levels of PNP and PNMC from complex matrices remains challenging. This study presented the synthesis of histidine-modified ZIF-90 on natural eggshell membrane (ESM@His-ZIF-90) via a facile one-step in-situ growth strategy, and its application as an adsorbent for dispersive membrane extraction (DME) of PNP and PNMC in human urine and environmental water.

Carboxylated cellulose nanocrystals mediated flower-like zinc oxide for antimicrobial without activation of light.

J Colloid Interface Sci

State Key Laboratory of Pulp and Paper Engineering, South China University of Technology, Guangzhou 510640, China. Electronic address:

Conventional light-driven antimicrobial strategies of zinc oxide (ZnO) are limited by inadequate illumination in dark environments. In this study, carboxylated cellulose nanocrystals (MCNC) mediated flower-like ZnO (C@Z) with self-promoted reactive oxygen species release under dark is fabricated. The adsorption of Zn ions on MCNC prompts the growth of ZnO along the (002) crystal plane, forming a flower-like hybrid with superior dispersibility and oxygen vacancies compared to MCNC-free ZnO, which exposes the (100) plane.
