Nonstructured regions in proteins that provide the link between two regular structured regions play a significant role in maintaining the scaffold of the protein. Not only do they act as connectors between two regular secondary structural elements of proteins but they also provide the necessary turn or reversal in the polypeptide chain. This incorporates flexibility in the structure. Thus an understanding of the structural aspects of the nonregular regions is necessary to have a better insight into these features. We can assume the nonregular region to be a contorted polypeptide segment tethered by regular secondary structured regions at both ends. To describe the undulating nature of the nonregular regions, we introduce a parameter called the "contortion index." This index describes how tortuously the region is organized. Our analysis shows that the contortion index is related to other physicochemical parameters and can be used to characterize the nonregular regions of proteins.

Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora - UFJF, School of Medicine, Department of Collective Health, Juiz de Fora, MG, Brazil.

This cross-sectional study aimed to analyze the self-perceived oral health of young university students at the Federal University of Juiz de Fora and identify the associated factors. Data were collected in 2021 using a self-administered questionnaire containing questions on students' sociodemographic variables and oral health. Binary logistic regression was applied in the multivariate analysis using the SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) software (version 20.

Department of Mathematics, Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte, MG, Brazil.

Objective: Previous studies indicated that face masks reduce the probability of infection by SARS-CoV-2 but did not examine the relationship between SARS-CoV-2 viral load and mask usage. This study analyzed this relationship.

Methods: This cross-sectional study evaluated patients admitted to a public Emergency Care Unit in Belo Horizonte, MG, Brazil, between October 2020 and March 2021.

Article Synopsis
  • Schizophrenia is a serious and chronic mental health disorder that poses significant challenges for patients, families, and society, particularly due to issues with treatment adherence impacting prognosis.
  • A study involving 320 patients diagnosed with schizophrenia in Morocco identified that a majority (about 74%) were non-adherent to their medication, with factors like youth, lack of education, living alone, and severe symptoms contributing to this non-adherence.
  • Findings also highlighted that non-adherent patients had more severe symptoms, poor insight into their condition, and experienced significant side effects from treatment, emphasizing the need for tailored management strategies to improve adherence and outcomes.
