Inadequate vessel maintenance or growth causes ischemia in diseases such as myocardial infarction, stroke, and neurodegenerative disorders. Therefore, developing an effective strategy to salvage ischemic tissues using a novel compound is urgent. Drug repurposing has become a widely used method that can make drug discovery more efficient and less expensive.

The master regulator of salicylic acid (SA)-mediated plant defense, NPR1 (NONEXPRESSER OF PR GENES 1) and its paralogs NPR3 and NPR4, act as SA receptors. After the perception of a pathogen, plant cells produce SA in the chloroplast. In the presence of SA, NPR1 protein is reduced from oligomers to monomers, and translocated into the nucleus.

(Noni) fruit has a long history of dietary use in tropical regions of the world. Pharmacological properties that have been attributed to the fruit include anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, and antioxidant properties. Xeronine, a small alkaloid which has been patented (US4543212) is one of the bioactive compounds of Noni fruit, which is believed to be capable of modifying the molecular structure of specific inactive proteins thereby regulating proper folding to active enzymes.
