In this paper, we describe the second-order nonlinear optical properties of a series of 1,3-dithiole-based electron donor-acceptor systems incorporating proaromatic donor and spacer groups. Modification of the proaromaticity of the quinoid spacer gives rise to NLO-phores with mubeta values ranging from -2000 x 10(-)(48) esu to +3000 x 10(-)(48) esu. Quite surprisingly, compounds with a p-benzoquinoid spacer and a strong acceptor group show negative mubeta values, usually associated to zwitterionic ground states, and yet they are largely quinoid, as evidenced by crystallographic data and theoretical calculations. Progressive benzoannulation of the spacer and introduction of alkylsulfanyl substituents on the dithiole donor unit result in a shift to more positive mubeta values. DFT and ab initio calculations verify these empirical trends.

Two distinct families of NLOphores featuring hydrazone donors were synthesized using click-type [2 + 2] cycloaddition retroelectrocyclizations (CA-RE). Despite the limitations in the substrate scope, it was shown for the first time that hydrazone-activated alkynes could undergo reactions with TCNE/TCNQ. The electrochemical, photophysical, and second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) characteristics of the chromophores were analyzed utilizing experimental and computational approaches.

Chromium(III) complexes bearing bidentate {NH(CH)PPh: PN, ()-[NH(CHPh)PPh]: P'N} and tridentate [PhP(CH)N(H)(CH)PPh: P-NH-P, ()-(Pr)PCHCHN(H)CH(Ph)CH(Ph)PPh: P-NH-P'] ligands have been synthesized using a mechanochemical approach. The complexes {-[Cr(PN)Cl]Cl (), -[Cr(P'N)Cl]Cl (), -Cr(P-NH-P)Cl (), and -Cr(P-NH-P')Cl ()} were obtained in high yield (95-97%) the grinding of the respective ligands andthe solid Cr(III) ion precursor [CrCl(THF)] with the aid of a pestle and mortar, followed by recrystallization in acetonitrile. The isolated complexes are high spin.

Effects of Mono-Vacancies of Oxygen and Manganese on the Properties of the MnO/Graphene Heterostructure.

Materials (Basel)

April 2022

Grupo GEFEM, Universidad Distrital Francisco José de Caldas, Bogotá CP 110111, Colombia.

The effects of the monovacancies of oxygen (VO) and manganese (VMn) on the structural and electronic properties of the 1T−MnO2/graphene heterostructure are investigated, within the framework of density functional theory (DFT). We found that the values of the formation energy for the heterostructure without and with vacancies of VO and VMn were −20.99 meVÅ2 , −32.

Reparameterization of the Weibull model for practical uses in food science.

J Food Sci

May 2022

Faculty of Bioscience and Technology for Food, Agriculture and Environment, University of Teramo, Teramo, Italy.

The reparameterization of the Weibull cumulative distribution function and its survival function was performed to obtain meaningful parameters in food and biological sciences such as the lag phase (λ), the maximum rate ( ), and the maximum increase/decrease of the function (A). The application of the Lambert function was crucial in order to achieve an explicit mathematical solution. Since the reparameterized model is applicable only when the shape parameter (α) is greater than one, the Weibull model was modified with the introduction of a new parameter ( ) that represents the model rate at time β (scale parameter).

Nonlinear Optical Properties of Porphyrin, Fullerene and Ferrocene Hybrid Materials.

Materials (Basel)

August 2021

Department of Chemical Science and Technologies, University of Rome "Tor Vergata", Via della Ricerca Scientifica 1, 00133 Rome, Italy.

In this research, we investigated the second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of multicomponent hybrid materials formed by -tetraphenylporphyrin P (both as free base and Zn complex), carrying in 2 or 2,12 β-pyrrolic position an electron donor ferrocene (Fc), and/or an electron acceptor fullerene (C60) moiety, connected to the porphyrin core via an ethynyl or an ethynylphenyl spacer. We measured the NLO response by the electric-field-induced second-harmonic generation (EFISH) technique in CHCl solution with a 1907 nm incident wavelength, recording for all the investigated compounds unexpected negative values of μβ. Since density functional theory (DFT) calculations evidenced for P-Fc dyads almost null ground state dipole moments and very low values for P-C60 dyads and Fc-P-C60 triads, our EFISH results suggested a significant contribution to γ of the purely electronic cubic term γ(-2ω; ω, ω, 0), which prevails on the quadratic dipolar orientational one μβ(-2ω; ω, ω)/5kT, as confirmed by computational evidence.
