The activity of antioxidant and detoxifying enzymes, superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSHPx), glutathione-S-transferase (GST), the SOD isoenzyme patterns and the contents of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), were determined in the livers of male and female rats after subchronic inhalation of mixtures of benzene, cyclohexanone and cyclohexane. Except for decreased GSHPx (with substrate cumene hydroperoxide) and GST activities in female rats, no differences in the activities of antioxidant and detoxifying enzymes and TBARS content occurred. Between the activities of GSHPx and GST was observed an indirect relationship. The activities of GSHPx-cum and GST were influenced by sex.

Ammonia, a ubiquitous contaminant in aquatic ecosystems, poses multifaceted threats to fish species at elevated concentrations. In order to investigate the toxic effects of chronic ammonia stress on the liver of juvenile , the present experiment was conducted to investigate the differences in changes in liver tissue structure, enzyme activities, and metabolomes after 28 days of ammonia exposure (0, 4, 8, and 16 mg/L). The findings revealed that ammonia exposure induced significant oxidative stress in the liver, manifesting in decreased activities of antioxidant enzymes SOD and GSH-Px, elevated levels of GSH, GST, and MDA, and heightened activities of immune enzymes LZM, ALP, and ACP.

Objective: Various plants have been reported to contain compounds that promote the transcriptional activity of Nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) to induce a set of xenobiotic detoxifying enzymes, such as NAD(P)H-quinone acceptor oxidoreductase 1 (NQO1), via the antioxidant response element (ARE). While conventional methods for evaluating Nrf2 induction potency include measurement of NQO1 activity, an ARE luciferase reporter assay was recently developed to specifically assess Nrf2 induction potency of compounds of interest. In this study, we compared the abilities of these two assays to evaluate and determine Nrf2 induction potency of plant-derived compounds.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) play a pivotal role in apoptosis. We reported that Blue Light (BL) induced oxidative stress in human retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells in vitro and increased drusen deposition and RPE cell apoptosis in human eyes. Here, we investigated the mechanisms underlying BL-induced damage to RPE cells.

Ochratoxin A (OTA) is a naturally occurring mycotoxin mainly produced by certain species of and and is a serious threat to human health and food safety. Previous studies showed that ML17 can completely degrade 1 μg/mL of OTA. The aim of this study was to investigate the degradation effect of ML17 at different concentrations of OTA, and specifically, to investigate the mechanism of OTA degradation by ML17.

Wheat could become poisoned when grown in soil with high arsenic (As) content. It is worthwhile to investigate the potential use of sulfur (S) and selenium (Se) for crop protection while detoxifying heavy metal(loid)s. In this study, a pot experiment was conducted under both single and combined application of the two elements.
