Capillary electrochromatography (CEC) was used to separate alkyl phenol ethoxylates (APEs) as model diblock copolymers, with monolithic polymers as stationary phases. The order of elution indicate that the two polymer blocks follow distinct chromatographic modes: size-exclusion for the poly(oxyethylene) group and adsorption interaction for the alkyl part. Therefore, our experimental results were compared to the theory describing liquid exclusion-adsorption chromatography (LEAC). They were found in perfect agreement with the theory, which turned to be verified for the first time over the full range of polymer lengths.

Polyethermethylsiloxanes (PEMSs) are silicone based polymers formed by attaching one or more ethylene oxide (EO)/propylene oxide (PO) chains to a siloxane chain. As the siloxane chain is lengthened, the polarity of the PEMSs are reduced. Little research has been conducted on the use of ultra-high performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC)-mass spectrometry (MS) to analyze PEMS oligomers with more than 4 siloxane groups because of their low polarity and poor solubility in water and acetonitrile (ACN).

A theory of chromatography is developed for partially cyclic polymers of tadpole- and manacle-shaped topological structures. We present exact equations for the distribution coefficient K at different adsorption interactions; simpler approximate formulae are also derived, relevant to the conditions of size-exclusion, adsorption, and critical chromatography. Theoretical chromatograms of heterogeneous partially cyclic polymers are simulated, and conditions for good separation by topology are predicted.

Block copolymers of ethylene oxide and epsilon-caprolactone were synthesized by microwave-assisted polymerization of epsilon-caprolactone with polyethylene glycol monomethyl ethers as initiator. The samples thus obtained were characterized by two-dimensional liquid chromatography with liquid chromatography at critical conditions as the first and liquid exclusion adsorption chromatography as the second dimension. A full baseline separation of all oligomers could be achieved in both dimensions.
