Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) has evolved significantly over fifty years into a powerful analytical technique. This review aims to achieve five main goals. (1) Providing a comprehensive history of SERS's discovery, its experimental and theoretical foundations, its connections to advances in nanoscience and plasmonics, and highlighting collective contributions of key pioneers.

Fifty years ago, in a trenchant analysis that challenged applied lie detection theory and science, David Lykken (1974) brought polygraphic interrogation methods to the attention of academia with the hope that these techniques would come under the purview of psychology and psychophysiology. In this perspective, I examine how this application of psychophysiology has evolved over the last half century and how its status has changed for 1) the comparison (control) question test (CQT), used in forensic applications; 2) polygraph screening tests, used to evaluate examinee integrity; and 3) the concealed information technique (CIT), used to assess recognition memory of crime details. The criticisms of the CQT and screening tests advanced by Lykken have been amplified and focused by the academic community over the last half century.

Purpose: To summarize the characteristics and trends of interest in retinoblastoma (Rb) in the last 50 years.
Methods: The Web of Science Database was used to find all studies focused on Rb published from 1970 to 2018. The term "retinoblastoma" was used to search for the 100 most cited records.
The November-December 2018 issue of the Hastings Center Report celebrates two anniversaries. In a supplement to the issue, the fifty-year-old debate about what "dead" means-a debate launched in 1968 by the publication of the Harvard report on brain death-is dissected and reinvigorated in a set of essays assembled by Robert Truog, of Harvard Medical School's Center for Bioethics, and The Hastings Center's Nancy Berlinger, Rachel Zacharias, and Mildred Solomon. Inside the regular issue, a set of essays celebrates the two-hundredth anniversary of the publication of Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus, the novel about death, dissection, and reinvigoration and a touchstone for much commentary about emerging biotechnologies.

Fifty years ago this summer, the Uniform Anatomical Gift Act was adopted by the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws and approved by the American Bar Association. The UAGA has provided a sound and stable legal platform on which to base an effective nationwide organ donation system. The cardinal principles of altruism, autonomy, and public trust are still important.
