Metastable state preceding shear zone instability: Implications for earthquake-accelerated landslides and dynamic triggering.

Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A

January 2025

Institut Langevin, École Supérieure de Physique et de Chimie Industrielles de la Ville de Paris, Université Paris Sciences & Lettres, CNRS, Paris 7587, France.

Understanding the dynamic response of granular shear zones under cyclic loading is fundamental to elucidating the mechanisms triggering earthquake-induced landslides, with implications for broader fields such as seismology and granular physics. Existing prediction methods struggle to accurately predict many experimental and in situ landslide observations due to inadequate consideration of the underlying physical mechanisms. The mechanisms that influence landslide dynamic triggering, a transition from static (or extremely slow creeping) to rapid runout, remain elusive.

Measurements on slope parameter mapping based on dual-energy CT enterography for improving Crohn's disease diagnosis and inflammatory activity evaluation.

Sci Rep

January 2025

Department of Radiology, Zhongshan Hospital Affiliated to Xiamen University, School of Medicine, Xiamen University, No.201-209 Hubinnan Road, Siming District, Xiamen, 361004, Fujian Province, China.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluates the effectiveness of slope parameter images (SPI) from dual-phase dual-energy CT enterography (DE-CTE) for diagnosing and assessing Crohn's disease (CD) activity.
  • Researchers analyzed data from 76 CD patients and 53 controls, finding significant differences in dual-phase SP and HU values between groups, indicating higher values in affected individuals.
  • The findings suggest that the AP SP of mesenteric fat shows the highest diagnostic potential for CD, emphasizing the usefulness of SPI in both diagnosis and assessing inflammation levels.

(partridgeberry; family Rubiaceae) is a creeping, understory plant native to eastern North America. The twinned, tubular flowers of this distylous plant are bright white and produce volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Partridgeberry has intermorph incompatibility and thus requires pollinators to move pollen from one morph to the other.

Objective: The objective of this study is to segment creeping fat and intestinal wall on computed tomography enterography (CTE) and develop a radiomic model to predict 1-year surgery risk in patients with Crohn's disease.

Methods: This retrospective study included 135 Crohn's disease patients who underwent CTE between January and December 2021 (training cohort) and 69 patients between January and June 2022 (test cohort). A total of 1874 radiomic features were extracted from the intestinal wall and creeping fat respectively on the venous phase CTE images, and radiomic models were constructed based on the selected features using the Boruta and extreme gradient boosting algorithms.
