To determine the effect of exogenous 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 [1,25(OH)2D3] combined with induced parturition on calcium (Ca) metabolism, cows received a single intramuscular injection of 1,25(OH)2D3 and prostaglandin F(2alpha) (PGF(2alpha)) closely before calving. Ten late-pregnant, multiparous Holstein cows were assigned to 1,25(OH)2D3 group (five treated with both 1,25(OH)2D3 and PGF(2alpha)) and control group (five treated with PGF(2alpha)). 1,25(OH)2D3 group showed an increase in plasma Ca concentration around parturition, whereas control group revealed a decrease in plasma Ca level. Plasma Ca concentration in 1,25(OH)2D3 group were significantly higher than that in control group during -0.5 to 3 days after parturition.

Fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23), a recently discovered phosphaturic substance playing a key role in genetic and oncogenic phosphate diabetes, is involved in the physiological regulation of phosphate metabolism. Moderate idiopathic phosphate diabetes (IPD) leading to male osteoporosis and diffuse pain resembling fibromyalgia has been described. The aim of our study was to define the role of FGF23 in the mechanism of IPD.

Objective: To determine whether anabolic hormones that affect the musculoskeletal system and active on the immune cells changed during cyclosporin A (CysA) therapy.
Methods: We carried out a randomized study of patients with rheumatic disease attending the outpatient clinic for rheumatic diseases. Twenty-four patients with chronic arthritis [20 with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and 4 with psoriatic arthritis (PsA)] were divided into 2 groups (10 RA, 2 PsA) and randomly given CysA 5 mg/kg daily or hydroxychloroquine (OH-Chlor) 6 mg/kg daily in divided doses.
Ten stable, normocalcemic renal transplant patients with good allograft function, hyperparathyroidism, and variable hypophosphatemia were treated for 2 to 9 months with oral calcium carbonate and replacement doses of vitamin D analogues. Parathyroid hormone levels (PTH) and renal phosphate wasting were not autonomous or fixed but decreased with therapy. Although serum 1-25(OH)2D3 levels could be shown to rise appropriately during oral vitamin D therapy and fall afterwards, a separate study in a larger group of patients showed no effect of elevated parathyroid hormone or hypophosphatemia to increase endogenous 1-25(OH)2D3 levels.

In this prospective study, we compared the frequency of some genetic and environmental factors possibly implicated in the occurrence of calcium stone disease. A group of 439 patients (258 males and 181 females) with one episode of calcium stone was compared to a group of 191 patients (131 males and 60 females) with recurrent calcium stone disease. Population with stones was also compared to control population (n = 78, 40 males and 38 females) matched to age.

To study Ca metabolism in critically ill children, we measured ionized Ca (Ca2+), parathyroid hormone (PTH), calcitonin, 25 hydroxycholecalciferol (25[OH] D3), 1-25 dihydroxycholecalciferol (1-25[OH]2D3, and gastrin levels in critically ill children and in healthy controls. Patients were considered hypocalcemic if Ca2+ was less than 1.1 mmol/L.
