We have demonstrated a new type of all-optical 2 x 2 switch by using two independent Yb3+ -doped nonlinear optical fibers with a long-period fiber grating pair and a 3-dB fiber coupler. A 400-Hz square-wave pulse train at approximately 1549.4 nm was fully switched between the two output ports up to 200 Hz by modulated pump signals at 976 nm with a maximum pump power of approximately 35 mW, where the extinction ratio at approximately 1549.4 nm between the on and the off states was approximately 17.5 dB.

Upconverting particles (UCPs), renowned for their capability to convert infrared to visible light, serve as invaluable imaging probes. Furthermore, their responsiveness to diverse external stimuli holds promise for leveraging UCPs as remote multiparametric sensors, capable of characterizing medium properties in a single assessment. However, the utility of UCPs in multiparametric sensing is impeded by crosstalk, wherein distinct external stimuli induce identical alterations in UCP luminescence, hindering accurate interpretation, and yielding erroneous outputs.

Luminescence thermometry is a non-contact method that can measure surface temperatures and the temperature of the area where the fluorescent probe is located, allowing temperature distribution visualizations with a camera. Ratiometric fluorescence thermometry, which uses the intensity ratio of fluorescence peaks at two wavelengths with different fluorescence intensity dependencies, is an excellent method for visualizing temperature distributions independent of the fluorophore spatial concentration, excitation light intensity and absolute fluorescence intensity. Herein, Nd/Yb/Er-doped YO nanomaterials with a diameter of 200 nm were prepared as phosphors for temperature distribution measurement of fluids at different temperatures.

Lanthanide-doped upconversion (UC) materials have been extensively investigated for their unique capability to convert low-energy excitation into high-energy emission. Contrary to previous reports suggesting that efficient UC luminescence (UCL) is exclusively observed in materials with a wide bandgap, we have discovered in this study that YMoO:Yb/Tm microcrystals, a narrowband material, exhibit highly efficient UC emission. Remarkably, these microcrystals do not display any four- or five-photon UC emission bands.

Tm/Yb-codoped ZrScWPO microparticles were prepared in order to solve the problems of the severe thermal quenching and unsatisfactory thermometric properties of most luminescent materials. The synthesized materials exhibit a rarely observed negative thermal expansion (NTE) effect, which was verified by X-ray diffraction experiments, performed under high temperature conditions. Upon excitation with a 980 nm laser, bright blue upconversion (UC) emissions originating from Tm were observed.

It is an important strategy to rationally design and construct specific-shaped microscopic nanostructures for developing poly-functional nanomaterials for different advanced applications. In this work, a novel technique combining a parallel electrospinning with a subsequent bi-crucible fluorination is advanced and utilized to facilely synthesize a brand-new peculiar one-dimensional (1D) wire-in-tube nanofiber//nanofiber shaped Janus nanofiber (WJNF) to refrain from usual complicated preparation procedures. Partition of four independent domains in the peculiar-structured Janus nanofiber is microscopically realized.
