In the context of increasing freshwater pollution, the impact on life-traits (survival, growth and fecundity) and locomotion of Potamopyrgus antipodarum of a 5-week field-concentration exposure to the cyanobacterial toxin microcystin-LR and the triazine herbicide, atrazine was studied. Whatever the age of exposed snails (juveniles, subadults, adults), microcystin-LR induced a decrease in survival, growth and fecundity but had no effect on locomotion. Atrazine induced a decrease in locomotory activity but had no significant effect on the life-traits. These results are discussed in terms of consequences to field populations.

Radioactive Ce in ionic (I-Ce), nano (N-Ce, 11 ± 9 nm mean primary particle size ± standard deviation) and micron-sized (M-Ce, 530 ± 440 µm) forms associated with natural and artificial diets in natural river water and synthetic freshwater were used to measure the real-time biokinetics of dietary Ce assimilation in a freshwater food chain. The model food chain consisted of microalgae (Raphidocelis subcapitata), snails (Potamopyrgus antipodarum) and prawns (Macrobrachium australiense). Pulse-chase experiments showed that 91-100 % of all forms of cerium associated with all diets and water types were eliminated from the digestive system of the snail and prawn within 24 h, with no detectable cerium assimilation.

Sixty percent of discrete surface water bodies in Europe do not meet the requirements for good ecological and chemical status and in Germany, the situation is even worse with over 90% of surface water bodies failing to meet the threshold. In addition to hydromorphological degradation, intensive land use and invasive species, chemical pollution is primarily considered to be responsible for the inadequate ecological status of the water bodies. As a quantitatively important source of micropollutants, wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) represent an important entry path for chemical stressors.

Growing use of synthetic materials has increased the number of stressors that can degrade freshwater ecosystems. Many of these stressors are relatively new and poorly understood, such as microplastics which are now ubiquitous in freshwater systems. The effects of microplastics on freshwater biota must be investigated further in order to better manage and mitigate their impacts.
