What are the mechanisms that convert cell-fate information into shape changes and movements, thus creating the biological forms that comprise tissues and organs? Tubulogenesis of the Drosophila dorsal eggshell structures provides an excellent system for studying the link between patterning and morphogenesis. Elegant genetic and molecular analyses from over a decade provide a strong foundation for understanding the combinatorial signaling events that specify dorsal anterior cell fates within the follicular epithelium overlying the oocyte. Recent studies reveal the morphogenetic events that alter that flat epithelial sheet into two tubes; these tubes form the mold for synthesizing the dorsal appendages--eggshell structures that facilitate respiration in the developing embryo. This review summarizes the mutant analyses that give insight into these patterning and morphogenetic processes.

Myosin storage myopathy (MSM) is a rare skeletal muscle disorder caused by mutations in the slow muscle/β-cardiac myosin heavy chain (MHC) gene. MSM missense mutations frequently disrupt the tail's stabilizing heptad repeat motif. Disease hallmarks include subsarcolemmal hyaline-like β-MHC aggregates, muscle weakness, and, occasionally, cardiomyopathy.

Throughout metazoa, germ cells assemble RNA-protein organelles (germ granules). In Drosophila ovaries, perinuclear nuage forms in the nurse cells, while compositionally similar polar granules form in the oocyte. A similar system appears to exist in the distantly related (∼350 million years) wasp Nasonia, with some surprising divergences.

The eggshell of the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster is a useful model for understanding the synthesis of a complex extracellular matrix. The eggshell is synthesized during mid-to-late oogenesis by the somatic follicle cells that surround the developing oocyte. We previously reported that female flies mutant for the gene drop-dead (drd) are sterile, but the underlying cause of the sterility remained unknown.
