Currently, event-related potential (ERP) signals are analysed in the time domain (ERP technique) or in the frequency domain (Fourier analysis and variants). In techniques of time-domain and frequency-domain analysis (short-time Fourier transform, wavelet transform) assumptions concerning linearity, stationarity, and templates are made about the brain signals. In the time-frequency component analyser (TFCA), the assumption is that the signal has one or more components with non-overlapping supports in the time-frequency plane. In this study, the TFCA technique was applied to ERPs. TFCA determined and extracted the oscillatory components from the signal and, simultaneously, localized them in the time-frequency plane with high resolution and negligible cross-term contamination. The results obtained by means of TFCA were compared with those obtained by means of other commonly used techniques of ERP analysis, such as bilinear time-frequency distributions and wavelet analysis. It is suggested that TFCA may serve as an appropriate tool for capturing the localized ERP components in the time-frequency domain and for studying the intricate, frequency-based dynamics of the human brain.

Animacy perception, the ability to discern living from non-living entities, is crucial for survival and social interaction, as it includes recognizing abstract concepts such as movement, purpose, and intentions. This process involves interpreting cues that may suggest the intentions or actions of others. It engages the temporal cortex (TC), particularly the superior temporal sulcus (STS) and the adjacent region of the inferior temporal cortex (ITC), as well as the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC).

Spike-wave-discharges (SWD) are the electrophysiological hallmark of absence epilepsy. SWD are generated in the thalamo-cortical network and a seizure onset zone was identified in the somatosensory cortex (S1). We have shown before that inhibition of the centromedian thalamic nucleus (CM) in GAERS rats resulted in a selective suppression of the spike component while rhythmic cortical 5-9 Hz oscillations remained present.

Fault diagnosis method of rolling bearing based on SSA-VMD and RCMDE.

Sci Rep

December 2024

College of Mechanical Engineering, Beihua University, Jilin City, Jilin, 132021, China.

To address the limitations of weak information extraction of rolling bearing fault features and the poor generalization performance of diagnostic methods, a novel method was proposed based on sparrow search algorithm (SSA)-Variational Mode Decomposition (VMD) and refined composite multi-scale dispersion entropy (RCMDE). Firstly, SSA optimized the key parameters of VMD to decompose the fault signal. The time-frequency domain comprehensive evaluation factor algorithm was then employed to select the sensitive intrinsic mode function (IMF) components for reconstruction.

How individuals evaluate the confidence of advice from advisors with high- and low-status: A behavioural and ERP study.

Although previous studies have shown that both advisors' social status and confidence level affect advisees' advice-taking behavior, it is currently unclear the mechanisms of their common actions. Here, using event-related potentials, we investigated how both advisors' social status and confidence level independently or jointly influence advice-taking behavior. Specifically, participants were asked to make choices in a dot-estimation task and then they would receive high- and low-confidence advice from advisors with high- and low-status.

This study demonstrates a rich complexity of the time-frequency ionospheric signal spectrum, dependent on the measurement type and platform. Different phenomena contributing to satellite-derived and ground-derived geophysical data that only selected signal bands can be potentially sensitive to seismicity over time, and they are applicable in lithosphere-atmosphere-ionosphere coupling (LAIC) studies. In this study, satellite-derived and ground-derived ionospheric observations are filtered by a Fourier-based band-pass filter, and an experimental selection of potentially sensitive frequency bands has been carried out.
