Aim: Female cardiac transplant recipients' aerobic capacity is 60% lower than sex and age-predicted values. The effect of exercise training on restoring the impaired aerobic endurance and muscle strength in female cardiac transplant recipients is not known. This study examined the effect that aerobic and strength training have on improving aerobic endurance and muscle strength in female cardiac transplant recipients.

Methods: 20 female cardiac transplant recipients (51 +/- 11 years) participated in this investigation. The subjects performed a baseline six-minute walk test and a leg-press strength test when they were discharged following cardiac transplantation. The subjects then participated in a 12-week exercise program consisting of aerobic and lower extremity strength training. Baseline assessments were repeated following completion of the exercise intervention.

Results: At baseline, the cardiac transplant recipients' aerobic endurance was 50% lower than age-matched predicted values. The training program resulted in a significant increase in aerobic endurance (pre-training: 322 +/- 104 m vs. post-training: 501 +/- 99 m, p < 0.05) and leg-press strength (pre-training: 48 +/- 16 kg. vs. post-training: 78 +/- 27 kg, p < 0.05).

Conclusion: Aerobic and strength training are effective interventions that can partially restore the impaired aerobic endurance and strength found in female cardiac transplant recipients.

Heart transplantation remains the ultimate treatment strategy for neonates and children with medically refractory end-stage heart failure and utilization of donors after circulatory death (DCD) can expand th donor pool. We have previously shown that mitochondrial transplantation preserves myocardial function and viability in neonatal swine DCD hearts to levels similar to that observed in donation after brain death (DBD). Herein, we sought to investigate the transcriptomic and proteomic pathways implicated in these phenotypic changes using ex situ perfused swine hearts.

IUPHAR Themed Review: The Gut Microbiome in Schizophrenia.

Pharmacol Res

December 2024

UniSA Clinical & Health Sciences, University of South Australia, Adelaide, South Australia 5000, Australia. Electronic address:

Gut microbial dysbiosis or altered gut microbial consortium, in schizophrenia suggests a pathogenic role through the gut-brain axis, influencing neuroinflammatory and neurotransmitter pathways critical to psychotic, affective, and cognitive symptoms. Paradoxically, conventional psychotropic interventions may exacerbate this dysbiosis, with antipsychotics, particularly olanzapine, demonstrating profound effects on microbial architecture through disruption of bacterial phyla ratios, diminished taxonomic diversity, and attenuated short-chain fatty acid synthesis. To address these challenges, novel therapeutic strategies targeting the gut microbiome, encompassing probiotic supplementation, prebiotic compounds, faecal microbiota transplantation, and rationalised co-pharmacotherapy, show promise in attenuating antipsychotic-induced metabolic disruptions while enhancing therapeutic efficacy.

Neuroblastoma (NB) is the most common extracranial solid tumor in children, with variable outcomes ranging from spontaneous remission to high-risk cases often leading to relapse or refractory disease. Approximately 50% of patients with NB have high-risk features, often experiencing relapse or refractory disease despite intensive treatments and the prognosis remains poor, with long-term event-free survival (EFS) rates below 10%,Radioactive iodine-labeled meta-iodobenzylguanidine (¹³¹I-mIBG) therapy, leveraging NB cells' radiosensitivity and expression of the norepinephrine transporter (NET), has shown promise in treating relapsed or refractory NB. Since 1985, ¹³¹I-mIBG has been studied to determine the maximum tolerated dose and side effects, with recent trials exploring its use in front-line treatment.

Introduction: Tacrolimus-induced thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA) causing acute kidney injury (AKI) without systemic features is a rare entity, particularly after non-renal solid organ transplantation.

Case Report: We describe the case of a patient with AKI after combined heart and lung transplantation. Renal biopsy revealed acute thrombotic microangiopathy which ultimately prompted initiation of eculizumab, a monoclonal antibody targeted against complement C5, with subsequent recovery in renal function.
