The anterior capsulolaboral reconstruction according to Jobe is a modification of the Bankart operation, performing the capsular shift via a subscapularis-split approach avoiding any incision into the musculature. A total of 24 overhead athletes with posttraumatic, chronic anterior shoulder instability underwent surgery. Twenty-two patients were examined after an average follow-up of 2.8 +/- 0.7 years. On average, a Constant-Murley-Score of 93.7 +/- 5.3 points and an ASES-Score of 95.0 +/- 5.1 points were achieved. The relaxation rate was 9 %. The study demonstrated, that despite the good clinical results, only 12 out of 22 (55 %) of patients were able to return to their previous sports activity level. This relevant problem is in agreement with other similar studies so that it was further addressed by determination of proprioception and electromyographic muscle activity. Postoperatively, a persisting proprioceptive deficit as well as an altered EMG pattern was found with a significant reduction in activity of the deltoideus muscle on the operated side. The analysis of the data of each patient showed that there was a significant relation between the restitution of proprioception and ability to return to the previous sports activity level. In contrast, the relation between EMG pattern and full recovery to completely unrestricted shoulder function was not significant.

Educational programs for health-care providers increasingly implement culturally sensitive care. Clear methods for educating students in cultural awareness are still lacking. Research indicates that simply increasing knowledge on ethnicity, culture, or migration does not improve culturally sensitive behavior and can foster stereotypes.

Health Protection Operations, South West, UK Health Security Agency, Bristol, UK.

In September 2023, the UK Health Security Agency's (UKHSA) South West Health Protection Team received notification of patients with perichondritis. All five cases had attended the same cosmetic piercing studio and a multi-disciplinary outbreak control investigation was subsequently initiated. An additional five cases attending the same studio were found.

Objective: Approximately 20% of familial cases of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) are caused by mutations in the gene encoding superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1). Epidemiological data have identified traumatic brain injury (TBI) as an exogenous risk factor for ALS; however, the mechanisms by which TBI may worsen SOD1 ALS remain largely undefined.

Methods: We sought to determine whether repetitive TBI (rTBI) accelerates disease onset and progression in the transgenic SOD1 mouse ALS model, and whether loss of the primary regulator of axonal degeneration sterile alpha and TIR motif containing 1 (Sarm1) mitigates the histological and behavioral pathophysiology.

Progress on animal speciation studies.

State Key Laboratory for Conservation and Utilization of Bio-Resource in Yunnan, School of Life Sciences of Yunnan University, Kunming 650500, China.

Speciation research represents our thinking and exploration about how new species are generated and maintained, and it is one of the most important parts of evolutionary biology. Revealing new species formation modes, processes of reproductive isolation establishment and their intrinsic genetic mechanisms, are not only important issues and primary tasks in the field of speciation, but also the key clues for our understandings about the species diversity in nature. Here, by focusing on animal groups, we first introduced different definitions of species concept, and then summarized present research progress and important breakthroughs made in the speciation modes and molecular mechanism of reproductive isolation.
