European mammals have been the focus of particularly detailed taxonomic studies by traditional morphological methods. However, DNA analyses have the potential to reveal additional, cryptic species. We describe two highly divergent evolutionary lineages within a small Eurasian mammal, the field vole (Microtus agrestis). We show that the two lineages can be detected not only with maternally (mitochondrial DNA), but also with paternally (Y chromosome) and biparentally (X chromosome) inherited DNA sequences. Reciprocal monophyly of all genealogies and their congruent geographical distributions is consistent with reproductive isolation. Our results suggest that the field vole should be reclassified as two separate species.

Parainfluenza virus 3 (PIV3) infection poses a substantial risk to vulnerable groups including infants, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals, and lacks effective treatments or vaccines. This study focuses on targeting the hemagglutinin-neuraminidase (HN) protein, a structural glycoprotein of PIV3 critical for viral infection and egress. With the objective of targeting these activities of HN, we identified eight neutralizing human monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) with potent effects on viral neutralization, cell-cell fusion inhibition, and complement deposition.

Introduction: Autoantibody-mediated complement activation plays an essential role in a variety of autoimmune disorders. However, the role of complement in systemic sclerosis (SSc) remains largely unknown. In this study, we aimed to determine the role of complement C3 in the development of a recently described SSc mouse model based on autoimmunity to angiotensin II receptor type 1 (AT1R).

Bacterial resistance, a global public health concern prioritized by the World Health Organization, is particularly alarming in Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Urgently addressing this, the search for new antibiotics has turned to plant essential oils. Our study focused essential oils derived from Colombian plants Croton killipianus, Croton smithianus, Croton leptostachyus, Croton hondensis, and Croton gossypiifolius.

In this paper, we present a microfluidic flow cytometer for simultaneous imaging and dielectric characterization of individual biological cells within a flow. Utilizing a combination of dielectrophoresis (DEP) and high-speed imaging, this system offers a dual-modality approach to analyze both cell morphology and dielectric properties, enhancing the ability to analyze, characterize, and discriminate cells in a heterogeneous population. A high-speed camera is used to capture images of and track multiple cells in real-time as they flow through a microfluidic channel.

Antiviral agents that target the viral envelope surface glycoproteins can disrupt the interactions between the viral glycoproteins and host cell receptors, thereby preventing viral entry into host cells. However, the mechanisms underlying glycoprotein processing and cellular trafficking have not been fully elucidated. In this study, we aimed to investigate the mechanism of action of cryptotanshinone (CTN) and dihydrotanshinone I (DTN) as inhibitors of viral glycoprotein trafficking, by assessing their inhibitory action on syncytium formation and cytopathic effects.
