When a thin glassy film is strained uniaxially, a shear deformation zone (SDZ) can be observed. The ratio of the thickness of the SDZ to that of the undeformed film is related to the maximum extension ratio, lambda, which depends on the entanglement molecular weight, M(e). We have measured lambda as a function of film thickness in strained freestanding films of polystyrene as a probe of M(e) in confinement. It is found that thin films stretch further than thick films before failure, consistent with the interpretation that polymers in thin films are less entangled than bulk polymers, thus the effective value of M(e) in thin films is significantly larger than that of the bulk. Our results are well described by a conceptually simple model based on the probability of finding intermolecular entanglements near an interface.

Piezoelectric micromachined ultrasound transducers (pMUTs), especially those using lead-free materials, are crucial next-generation microdevices for precise actuation and sensing, driving advancements in medical, industrial, and environmental applications. Bismuth ferrite (BiFeO) is emerging as a promising lead-free piezoelectric material to replace Pb(Zr,Ti)O in pMUTs. Despite its potential, the integration of BiFeO thin films into pMUTs has been hindered by poling issues.

It is well known that metals and metal oxides with different crystal facets exhibit varying sensitivity in gas sensors, but this strategy is rarely used in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Herein, we proved for the first time that Cu metal-organic with high energy crystal facets (Cu-MOF-74-300) shows a much higher sensitivity than the low energy crystal facets (Cu-MOF-74-110), with a up to 2 times response more than Cu-MOF-74-110 and ultra-low limit of detection (LOD) of 68 ppb to toluene vapors. In addition, this strategy was further demonstrated on MOF-14 and HKUST-1, which are also Cu-centered and exhibit clear recognition effects on benzene and xylene, respectively.

The Stabilization of bubble magnetic textures in zero magnetic field has garnered significant attention due to its potential application in spintronic devices. Herein, we employed a home-built rotatable magnetic force microscopy (MFM) to observe the evolution of magnetic domains in NiO/Ni/Ti thin films. Magnetic stripe domains decay into isolated magnetic bubbles under an out-of-plane magnetic field at 100 K, and magnetic stripes reappear when the external magnetic field is reduced to zero.

Crystalline thermoelectric materials, especially SnSe crystals, have emerged as promising candidates for power generation and electronic cooling. In this study, significant enhancement in ZT is achieved through the combined effects of lattice distortions and band convergence in multiple electronic valence bands. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate that cation vacancies together with Pb substitutional doping promote the band convergence and increase the density of states (DOS) near the Fermi surface of SnSe, leading to a notable increase in the Seebeck coefficient (S).

Iodine in the atmosphere destroys ozone and can nucleate particles by formation of iodic acid, HIO. Recent field observations suggest iodate recycles from particles sustaining significant gas-phase IO radical concentrations (0.06 pptv) in aged stratospheric air, and in elevated dust plumes.
