Coherent folded acoustic phonons in a multilayered GaSb/InAs epitaxial heterostructure were generated by femtosecond laser pulses and studied by means of ultrafast x-ray diffraction. Coherent phonons excited simultaneously in the fundamental acoustic branch and the first back-folded branch were detected. This represents the first clear evidence for phonon branch folding based directly on the atomic motion to which x-ray diffraction is sensitive. From a comparison of the measured phonon-modulated x-ray reflectivity with simulations, evidence was found for a reduction of the laser penetration depth. This reduction can be explained by the self-modulation of the refractive index due to photogenerated free carriers.

Dictyostelium discoideum is a unicellular slime mold, developing into a multicellular fruiting body upon starvation. Development is accompanied by large-scale shifts in gene expression program, but underlying features of chromatin spatial organization remain unknown. Here, we report that the Dictyostelium 3D genome is organized into positionally conserved, largely consecutive, non-hierarchical and weakly insulated loops at the onset of multicellular development.

We have compared the biomechanical properties of human and porcine corneas using vibrational optical coherence tomography (VOCT). The elastic modulus of the cornea has been previously reported in the literature to vary from about several kPa to more than several GPa based on the results of different techniques. In addition, the formation of corneal cones near the central cornea in keratoconus has been observed in the clinic.

Purpose: This study examined six patients with Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada (VKH) disease using retromode infrared scanning laser ophthalmoscopy (RMI-SLO).
Methods: We conducted a single-center retrospective review of the medical records of six patients diagnosed with VKH disease. The RMI-SLO images were compared to those obtained using color fundus photography, optical coherence tomography (OCT), and dye-based retinal angiography.

Ionic complexes of electrostatically charged biomacromolecules are key players in various biological processes like nucleotide transportation, organelle formation, and protein folding. These complexes, abundant in biological systems, contribute to the function, responsiveness, and mechanical properties of organisms. Coherent with these natural phenomena, hydrogels formed through the complexation of oppositely charged polymers exhibit unique attributes, such as rapid self-assembly, hierarchical microstructures, tunable properties, and protective encapsulation.
