An understanding of the species that form in mixtures of alcohol and water is important for their use in liquid chromatography applications. In reverse-phase liquid chromatography the retention of solutes on a chromatography column is influenced by the composition of the mobile phase, and in the case of alcohol and water mobile phases, the amount of free alcohol and water present. Previous and similar modeling studies of methanol (MeOH) and water mixtures by near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy have found up to four species present including free MeOH and water and MeOH and water complexes formed by hydrogen bonding associations. In this work an equilibrium model has been applied to NIR measurements of MeOH and water mixtures. A high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) pump was coupled to an NIR flow cell to produce a gradual change in mixture composition. This resulted in a greater mixture resolution than has been achieved previously by manual mixture preparation. It was determined that five species contributed to the data. An equilibria model consisting of MeOH, H2O, MeOH(H2O) (log K(MeOH)H2O = 0.10+/-0.03), MeOH(H2O)4 (log K(MeOH)4H2O = -2.14+/-0.08), and MeOH(H2O)9 (log K(MeOH)9H2O = -8.6+/-0.1) was successfully fitted to the data. The model supports the results of previous work and highlights the progressive formation of MeOH and water complexes that occur with changing mixture composition. The model also supports that mixtures of MeOH and water are not simple binary mixtures and that this is responsible for observed deviations from expected elution behavior.

Direct photodegradation of aromatic carbamate pesticides: Kinetics and mechanisms in aqueous vs. non-aqueous media.

J Hazard Mater

February 2025

Key Laboratory of Poyang Lake Basin Agricultural Resource and Ecology of Jiangxi Province, College of Land Resource and Environment, Jiangxi Agricultural University, Nanchang 330045, China. Electronic address:

The direct photodegradation quantum yields (Φ) of five representative aromatic carbamate pesticides - carbaryl, carbofuran, propoxur, isoprocarb, and metolcarb - were examined in both aqueous and non-aqueous solutions, the latter mimicking hydrophobic environments such as leaf surfaces. For carbaryl, carbofuran, isoprocarb, and metolcarb, the Φ values generally followed the order Φ < Φ < Φ, while propoxur showed a different trend, Φ < Φ < Φ. Scavenging and laser flash photolysis experiments, combined with quantum chemical calculations, were used to clarify the photodegradation mechanisms.

The objective of this research was to investigate the phenolic profile and some biological properties of the leaves of subsp. grown wild in Algeria, still unexplored. The leaves were subjected to extraction with 80% MeOH using simple maceration (SM) and ultrasound-assisted maceration (UM) to establish the most efficient conditions for the recovery of phenolic compounds.

The high antioxidant content of mushrooms such as polyphenols, polysaccharides, carotenoids, ergothioneine, glutathione, vitamins, and other compounds, has sparked interest in their potential use in preventive and therapeutic medicine. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the antioxidant potential of various macrofungi by measuring 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity and quantifying two classes of compounds: phenolics (TPC) and polysaccharides, both endo- (IPS) and exopolysaccharides (EPS). Species-specific abilities to produce mycelium, polysaccharides, and polyphenols were observed under submerged cultivation without agitation over 14 days.

Coordination Competition Strategy for Constructing High-Energy Photosensitive Complexes.

Inorg Chem

March 2025

State Key Laboratory of Environment-friendly Energy Materials, Southwest University of Science and Technology, Sichuan Mianyang 621010, China.

High-dimensional energetic coordination compounds (ECCs) exhibit high stability and low sensitivity owing to their complex network structure, making them valuable in functional energetic materials such as combustion catalysis and insensitive detonating explosives. Four ECCs, [Co(DNBT)(HO)] (ECC-1), [Ni(DNBT)(HO)] (ECC-2), [Cu(DNBT)(HO)MeOH] (ECC-3), and [Zn(DNBT)(HO)] (ECC-4), were synthesized by modifying the metal centers and using 5,5'-dinitro-4,4'-3,3'-bi(1,2,4-triazole) (DNBT) as ligands. After changing the solution environment and adding the auxiliary ligand 4-1,2,4-triazol-4-amine (4-ATr), we obtained three ECCs with similar coordination structures once again: [Co(DNBT)(4-ATr)(HO)] (ECC-5), [Ni(DNBT)(4-ATr)(HO)] (ECC-6), and [Cu(DNBT)(4-ATr)] (ECC-7).

6-Fluoro-2-(aryl)quinoline-4-carboxylic acids 1-11 were synthesized via Pfitzinger reactions between 5-fluoroisatin and methyl aryl ketones. The molecules were studied regarding the impact of their substituent patterns (a-e) on their optical and bioactivity properties. All compounds were fluorescent in solution and had significant solvatochromic behavior, measured in tetrahydrofuran, dichloromethane, dimethylsulfoxide, acetonitrile, methanol, and water at different pHs.
