Published: May 2005

Objective: To evaluate the diagnostic value of multi-slice spiral CT (MSCT) for plasma cell mastitis.

Methods: Radiographs of MSCT for forty-six patients with plasma cell mastitis diagnosed by pathological examination were reviewed.

Results: The findings of MSCT of plasma cell mastitis could be divided into four types, including the inflammation type, the abscess type, the sinus and fistula type, and the mixed type, and each type had its radiographic characteristics.

Conclusion: MSCT is helpful for diagnosing plasma cell mastitis and should be used as an examination of first choice for the patients.

Purpose Of Review: The canonical pathogenesis of spondyloarthritis (SpA) involves inflammation driven by HLA-B27, type 3 immunity, and gut microbial dysregulation. This review based on information presented at the SPARTAN meeting highlights studies on the pathogenesis of SpA from the past year, focusing on emerging mechanisms such as the roles of microbe-derived metabolites, microRNAs (miRNAs) and cytokines in plasma exosomes, specific T cell subsets, and neutrophils.

Recent Findings: The induction of arthritis in a preclinical model through microbiota-driven alterations in tryptophan catabolism provides new insights as to how intestinal dysbiosis may activate disease via the gut-joint axis.

Systemic bile acid homeostasis plays an important role in human health. In this study, a physiologically based kinetic (PBK) model that includes microbial bile acid deconjugation and intestinal bile acid reuptake via the apical sodium-dependent bile acid transporter (ASBT) was applied to predict the systemic plasma bile acid concentrations in human upon oral treatment with the antibiotic tobramycin. Tobramycin was previously shown to inhibit intestinal deconjugation and reuptake of bile acids and to affect bile acid homeostasis upon oral exposure of rats.

Effects of Aging on Glucose and Lipid Metabolism in Mice.

Aging Cell

December 2024

Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA.

Aging is accompanied by multiple molecular changes that contribute to aging associated pathologies, such as accumulation of cellular damage and mitochondrial dysfunction. Tissue metabolism can also change with age, in part, because mitochondria are central to cellular metabolism. Moreover, the cofactor NAD, which is reported to decline across multiple tissues during aging, plays a central role in metabolic pathways such as glycolysis, the tricarboxylic acid cycle, and the oxidative synthesis of nucleotides, amino acids, and lipids.

The correlation between Fischer's ratio and the risk of cardiac dysfunction in heart failure patients.

BMC Cardiovasc Disord

December 2024

Department of Cardiovascular Medicine, Rui Jin Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, Shanghai, 200025, People's Republic of China.

Backgrounds: Due to the high mortality and hospitalization rate in chronic heart failure (HF), it is of great significance to study myocardial nutrition conditions. Amino acids (AAs) are essential nutrient metabolites for cell development and survival. This study aims to investigate the associations and prognostic value of plasma branched-chain amino acid/aromatic amino acid ratio (Fischer's ratio, FR) in patients with left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) ≤ 50%.

Background: Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are essential for cell-to-cell communication because they transport functionally active molecules, including proteins, RNA, and lipids, from secretory cells to nearby or distant target cells. Seminal plasma contains a large number of EVs (sEVs) that are phenotypically heterogeneous. The aim of the present study was to identify the RNA species contained in two subsets of porcine sEVs of different sizes, namely small sEVs (S-sEVs) and large sEVs (L-sEVs).
