Manganese oxides, present as minor phases in the vadose zone, have been previously shown to sequester large quantities of plutonium under environmental conditions. We are now continuing these studies with Np(V). Sorption onto manganite (MnOOH) and hausmannite (Mn3O4) at solid-to-solution ratios of 2.5-3.3 mg/mL has been studied as a function of neptunium concentration and pH. The sorption of Np increased as a function of pH for both minerals, attaining a maximum at neutral pH, and then decreased with increasing alkalinity. X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (XAFS), taken at the Np L(III)-edge, has been used to determine the oxidation state of the sorbed Np. Our experimental results indicate reduction of the Np(V) because of interaction with the X-ray beam. These findings significantly impact the interpretation of results reported elsewhere on Np(V) investigated though the use of high-intensity X-ray beams.

Nanocomposites of epoxy with FeO featuring dynamic disulfide bonds were fabricated. To facilitate the dispersion of FeO nanoparticles, we synthesized poly(ε-caprolactone)-grafted FeO nanoparticles, which were then incorporated into epoxy to generate robust interfacial interactions between epoxy and the inorganic nanoparticles. Through this approach, a fine dispersion of the inorganic nanoparticles in the epoxy matrix was successfully obtained.

High-performance flexible pressure sensors are crucial for applications such as wearable electronics, interactive systems, and healthcare technologies. Among these, iontronic pressure sensors have garnered particular attention due to their superior sensitivity, enabled by the giant capacitance variation of the electric double layer (EDL) at the ionic-electronic interface under deformation. Key advancements, such as incorporating microstructures into ionic layers and employing diverse materials, have significantly improved sensor properties like sensitivity, accuracy, stability, and response time.

Anode-free sodium batteries (AFSBs) hold great promise for high-density energy storage. However, high-voltage AFSBs, especially those can stably cycle at a wide temperature range are challenging due to the poor electrolyte compatibility toward both the cathode and anode. Herein, high-voltage AFSBs with cycling ability in a wide temperature range (-20-60 °C) are realized for the first time via a sole-solvent high-entropy electrolyte based on the diethylene glycol dibutyl ether solvent (D2) and NaPF salt.

The application of micro-nano size photovoltaic waste silicon (wSi) as an anode material for lithium-ion battery holds significant practical potential; However, it faces a series of challenges related to the volume expansion of Si during cycling. In this study, a simple, efficient, and eco-friendly microwave method is proposed for the rapid preparation of graphene-coated silicon materials (wSi@rGO) in just a few seconds, in which graphene as the stable interface mitigates structural failure caused by significant volume expansion, enhances electron and ion conductivity, inhibits undesirable side reactions between silicon and electrolyte, and promotes the stability of solid electrolyte interface (SEI). Importantly, the instantaneous high temperature generated by microwaves facilitates the formation of interfacial SiC chemical bonds, which strengthen the interaction between Si and graphene, thereby reducing Si delamination.

The development of an efficient and durable photoelectrode is critical for achieving large-scale applications in photoelectrochemical water splitting. Here, we report a unique photoelectrode composed of reconfigured gallium nitride nanowire-on-silicon wafer loaded with Au nanoparticles as cocatalyst that achieved an impressive applied bias photon-to-current efficiency of 10.36% under AM 1.
