[Is stress-induced analgesia a measure of stress severity?].

Published: March 2005

When comparing magnitudes of "behavioural despair" (duration of immobility) and stress-induced analgesia in the tail suspension test and cold water swim test with SHR and NMRI male mice. The results might depend on saline injection prior the test and on the fact that exposure to cold water in swim test was sufficient to alter the response patterns. The findings show that the main parameters are closely related to each other. Stress-induced analgesia seems to be a measure of stress as the stress becomes stronger analgesia changes in linear dependence, whereas duration of immobility has an invert U-shaped function.

Maternal separation (MS) serves as a critical model of early life stress (ELS) that can lead to mood disorders, such as depression. Our previous studies suggest that MS may disrupt synaptic transmission in adulthood. While electroacupuncture (EA) has demonstrated antidepressant effects in several animal models of stress-induced depression, it remains unclear whether EA can reverse synaptic transmission deficits caused by ELS.

Elevated glucocorticoid levels with reduced glucocorticoid responsiveness have been reported in chronic inflammatory conditions. Activation of neurons in the nucleus of the solitary tract by transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) may activate inhibitory pathways projecting to the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVN), thus inhibiting corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) release and improving glucocorticoid dysfunction in chronic inflammatory conditions. Healthy adults (n = 12) participated in experimental (taVNS) and control (sham-taVNS) sessions at least 4 days apart.

Stress-induced premature senescence (SIPS) affects cellular functionality due to various stressors. In intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD), nucleus pulposus (NP) cell dysfunction is crucial. Electroacupuncture (EA) has been used to alleviate low back pain and delay IVDD, but its potential mechanism is not yet well understood.

Stress is a potent modulator of pain. Specifically, acute stress due to physical restraint induces stress-induced analgesia (SIA). However, where and how acute stress and pain pathways interface in the brain are poorly understood.

Mu opioid receptors (MORs) represent a vital mechanism related to the modulation of stress-induced analgesia (SIA). Previous studies have reported on the gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)ergic "disinhibition" mechanisms of MORs on the descending pain modulatory pathway of SIA induced in the midbrain. However, the role of the MORs expressed in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), one of the main cortical areas participating in pain modulation, in SIA remains completely unknown.
