The type strain of Nocardia corynebacterioides was the subject of a polyphasic taxonomic study. The 16S rRNA gene sequence was aligned with the sequences of representatives of the genera Corynebacterium, Dietzia, Gordonia, Mycobacterium, Nocardia, Rhodococcus, Skermania, Tsukamurella and Williamsia, and phylogenetic trees were constructed by using maximum-parsimony, maximum-likelihood and neighbour-joining methods. It was evident from the phylogenetic analysis that N. corynebacterioides represents a distinct phyletic line within the genus Rhodococcus. Menaquinone analysis showed that the organism contained dihydrogenated menaquinone with eight isoprene units, MK-8(H(2)), as the major isoprenologue. The genealogical evidence, together with chemotaxonomic and phenotypic data from this and previous studies, indicates that N. corynebacterioides DSM 20151(T) (= CIP 104510(T)) should be reclassified in the genus Rhodococcus as Rhodococcus corynebacterioides comb. nov.

A 57-year-old Japanese man on peritoneal dialysis developed peritoneal dialysis-associated peritonitis caused by Rhodococcus corynebacterioides. After the introduction of peritoneal dialysis, he had experienced four episodes of peritonitis, but the causative organism was not identified in any of episode. The use of microbial phosphotriesterases in the degradation of organophosphorus compounds employed as pesticides, plasticizers and petroleum additives is a sustainable alternative for bioremediation of water and soils, decontamination of particular foods and as poisoning antidote. Whole cells of six wild type microorganisms-Streptomyces phaeochromogenes, Streptomyces setonii, Nocardia corynebacterioides, Nocardia asteroides and two Arthrobacter oxydans-selected in our lab as phosphotriesterase sources, were further tested as biocatalysts in the hydrolysis of paraoxon, methyl paraoxon, methyl parathion, coroxon, coumaphos, dichlorvos and chlorpyrifos, highlighting 98% conversion of chlorpyrifos into its hydrolysis products using whole cells of S. phaeochromogenes at pH 8 and 40 °C.
