The clinical significance of specimens with low sample-to-cutoff (S/Co) ratios in the Ortho VITROS chemiluminescence assay (CIA) for detection of antibodies to hepatitis C virus (HCV) was evaluated. In one study of 482 CIA-reactive samples, none of the 83 samples with S/Co ratios of < 5 was HCV RNA positive. In a subsequent study, 332 samples with S/Co ratios of between 1 and 20 were tested with the recombinant immunoblot assay (RIBA). None of the 163 samples with S/Co ratios of < 5 was RIBA positive, 83% were RIBA negative, and 28 samples (18%) were RIBA indeterminate. HCV RNA and/or clinical evidence of hepatitis was not found in the 27 indeterminate cases examined. These results show that over 99% of samples with very low S/Co ratios (< or = 5) have no evidence of HCV infection. Therefore, we suggest that the HCV antibody testing algorithm for the VITROS assay might be modified to eliminate supplemental testing of samples with very low S/Co ratios.

Contrasting Summertime Trends in Vehicle Combustion Efficiency in Los Angeles, CA and Salt Lake City, UT.

Environ Sci Technol

January 2025

Department of Environmental Sciences, University of California, Riverside, Riverside, California 92521, United States.

Policy interventions and technological advances are mitigating emissions of air pollutants from motor vehicles. As a result, vehicle fleets are expected to progressively combust fuel more efficiently, with a declining ratio of carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide (CO/CO) in their emissions. We assess trends in traffic combustion efficiency in Los Angeles (LA) and Salt Lake City (SLC) by measuring changes in summertime on-road CO/CO between 2013 and 2021 using mobile observations.

This paper presents the synthesis of mixed metal oxide (BaTiO: ZnO) (B: Z) sensors with various molar ratios using a low-temperature hydrothermal method for dual sensing applications (gas and acceleration). The sensor developed with an equal molar ratio of 1B:1Z, showcases superior performance compared to unmixed and alternative mixed metal oxide sensors. This equilibrium in ratios optimally enhances synergistic effects between elements B and Z, resulting in improved sensing properties.

Which treatment in acetabular fractures of the elderly: Osteosynthesis, osteosynthesis-THA or orthopedic treatment? 2-years retrospective outcomes of a therapeutic algorithm.

Orthop Traumatol Surg Res

October 2024

Department of Orthopedic and Traumatological Surgery, Hôpital François Mitterrand, CHU, 21079 Dijon Cedex, France; INSERM, UMR1093-CAPS, Univ. Bourgogne Franche-Comté, UB, 21000, Dijon, France; INSERM, CIC 1432, Module Plurithématique, Plateforme d'Investigation Technologique, 21000 Dijon, France.

Introduction: Acetabular fractures account for 7% of osteoporotic fractures, with an epidemiological peak between 75 and 80 years of age. The aim of this study is to evaluate the results of treatment of these fractures in a population aged over 65.

Hypothesis: Surgical treatment would lead to better survival and functional outcomes in the management of acetabular fractures in subjects aged over 65.

Chagas disease (CD) has become a worldwide problem due to globalization. In Europe, most cases are imported and are diagnosed in the chronic phase by two serological tests, as recommended by the World Health Organization. Chemiluminescent microparticle immunoassays (CMIAs) are an emerging alternative to the diagnostic standard.
