Background: Despite the generally accepted World Health Organization guidelines on semen analysis, an individual's results can display significant variation when performed across time or in different laboratories. Semen parameters are in fact highly variable measures that can differ significantly between various analyses. Numerous researchers have discovered a wide range of semen parameters within each individual male, but only a few studies included the analysis of semen parameters variability in patients with infertility.

Despite strong evidence of a physiologic relationship between cholecystokinin (CCK) and corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) in the rat central nervous system (CNS), evidence of such a relationship between the two hormones in the human CNS is lacking. A post hoc analysis of serial concentrations of immunoreactive CCK and CRH, obtained every ten minutes from CSF continuously collected over six hours, was performed. A total of 30 subjects were studied: 15 normal volunteers, 10 patients with major depression, and 5 recently-abstinent, alcohol-dependent patients.

Since the human acrosome reaction is considered a prerequisite for normal fertilization and the spontaneous acrosome reaction rate is low, laboratory tests using calcium ionophores to induce the acrosome reaction have been devised and applied to the investigation of patients. The introduction of any new laboratory test into routine clinical practice is usually accompanied by the determination of intra- and inter-subject variability within the normal population, and the derivation of reference values to distinguish between affected and unaffected populations. The acrosome reaction to ionophore challenge (ARIC) test was evaluated and found to have (i) intra- and inter-assay coefficients of variation of 10.
