Changes in medical practice and in the financing of hospital care have resulted in a narrowing spectrum of adult medical illness among hospitalized patients. Residency training based primarily in the hospital underemphasizes many diseases and disorders that are treated exclusively at ambulatory sites. Curriculum modifications should allow for increased training time for residents in the ambulatory care setting. Reducing clinical inpatient service demands on residents and alleviating the attendant stress will allow more time for such educational experiences. The Medical College of Virginia has had recent experience with three modifications to the curriculum, which are intended to accomplish these ends: a specialized unit for inpatient services, which is not staffed by interns; a reorganization of the daily inpatient care schedule; and a modified "night float" team.

Histones are essential nuclear proteins that package eukaryotic DNA into chromosomes, play a vital role in gene regulation, DNA replication, DNA repair and chromosome condensation. Understanding histone modifications is crucial for grasping biological and disease-related processes. Specific alterations in histone modifications serve as sensitive and selective biomarkers for conditions like cancer, impacting both tumor and immune cells and affecting their interactions.

Polyolefins are simple hydrocarbons that require additional chemical modifications or functional additives to give them custom functions. Recent research in the development of functional polyolefins has surpassed the traditional approach of simply improving surface properties by incorporating polar moieties. Creating custom functionalized polyolefins by using specific functional units has attracted increasing attention.

Epigenetics in Learning and Memory.

Subcell Biochem

January 2025

Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Life Sciences, Institute of Biomedical Sciences (ICB), Universidad Andres Bello, Santiago, Chile.

In animals, memory formation and recall are essential for their survival and for adaptations to a complex and often dynamically changing environment. During memory formation, experiences prompt the activation of a selected and sparse population of cells (engram cells) that undergo persistent physical and/or chemical changes allowing long-term memory formation, which can last for decades. Over the past few decades, important progress has been made on elucidating signaling mechanisms by which synaptic transmission leads to the induction of activity-dependent gene regulation programs during the different phases of learning (acquisition, consolidation, and recall).

In this study, a series of experiments are done to analyze the effect of bluff body geometry on the NO reduction of a natural gas-air stratified swirl burner. The stratified burner of Cambridge University is chosen to study the mentioned geometrical effect, and the geometry modification of bluff body is used as a simple method for NO reduction, which can be easily applied to the systems using these burners, including gas turbines. The bluff body geometrical change to an annular bluff body is inspired by the fact that the areas in which the edge of the bluff body is in contact with the unburned flow have lower temperatures, which can drastically affect combustion parameters, especially emissions.

As modification strategies are actively developed, the photothermal effect is expected to be a viable way to enhance the PEC water splitting performance. Herein, we demonstrate that the photothermal polyaniline (PANI) layer inserted between CoF cocatalyst and BiVO can enhance the photocurrent density of pure BiVO by 3.50 times.
