The complexity of our life experiences and the rapid progress in science and technology clearly necessitate reflections from the humanities. The ever-growing intersection between science and society fosters the emergence of novel interdisciplinary fields of research. During the past decade, Medical Humanities arose to meet the need to unravel hidden information beyond technology-driven and fact-based medicine.

Neurotechnological cognitive enhancement has become an area of intense scientific, policy, and ethical interest. However, while work has increasingly focused on ethical views of the general public, less studied are those with personal connections to cognitive impairment. Using a mixed-methods design, we surveyed attitudes regarding implantable neurotechnological cognitive enhancement in individuals who self-identified as having increased likelihood of developing dementia (n=25; 'Our Study'), compared to a nationally representative sample of Americans (n=4726; 'Pew Study').

Hospitals and healthcare workers in Africa, and Nigeria specifically, are increasingly being confronted by complex situations, in which decision-making becomes more troublesome in the presence of conflicting goals, values, and preferences among the respective stakeholders. Given that all healthcare decision-making requires ethical considerations, and there is a noted absence or paucity of documentation of institutionalized mechanisms for addressing any associated concern or dilemma in Nigeria, it is thus unclear how most hospitals, healthcare workers, and the public handle the ethical dimensions of patients' care and hospital practice, while also generating possibilities for improvement in care quality. This paper is an attempt to heighten awareness of the need for clinical ethics support services (CESS) in Nigeria and encourage thought, reflection and dialogue over the issues raised.

Public alignment with longevity biotechnology: an analysis of framing in surveys and opinion studies.

Biogerontology

November 2024

Department of Bioethics and Health Humanities, The University of Texas Medical Branch, 301 University Blvd., Galveston, TX, 77555, USA.

This article examines the framing and public perception of longevity biotechnology, or geroscience, which aims to extend both healthspan and lifespan by targeting the biological processes of aging. Although often seen as moving into the mainstream, questions remain about its ability to meet these ambitious goals, given the complexities of understanding and manipulating aging biology. Drawing on an analysis of qualitative studies and surveys conducted over the past two decades, this paper explores how public attitudes toward anti-aging science are framed, suggesting that studies often emphasize life extension over healthspan gains.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has great potential to assist researchers in writing research proposals, by generating hypotheses, identifying literature, and suggesting methods for data collection and analysis. However, the use of AI in research proposal writing raises important bioethical implications, including the unintentional propagation of bias and questions about the role of human expertise and judgment in the research process. This paper explores the ethical implications of using AI in research proposal writing and proposes guidelines for the responsible and ethical use of AI in this context.
