A comparative study was conducted between the assimilation of D-proline and the growth on canavanine-glycine-bromothymol blue (CGB) medium used for the classification of the varieties of Cryptococcus neoformans. In the 86 studied strains, 100% of coincidence between both methods allowed to affirm that 95.34% corresponded to the neoformans var. and the rest (4.65%) to the gattii var. The results obtained corroborated that all the autoctonous clinical isolations up to the present correspond to the. neoformans var. and made possible to suggest the use of D-proline for the initial evaluation of strains, as an alternative and simple method that presented under these conditions high coincidence with the reference method (growth in CGB).

Acetyl CoA synthetases (ACS) have emerged as drug targets for the treatment of cancer, metabolic diseases as well as fungal and parasitic infections. Although a variety of small molecule ACS inhibitors have been discovered, the systematic optimization of these molecules has been slowed by a lack of structural information regarding their mechanism of inhibition. Through a chemical genetic-based, synthetic lethal screen of the human fungal pathogen , we identified an isoxazole-based ACS inhibitor with antifungal activity and exquisite selectivity for the Acs1 relative to human ACSS2 as well as other fungal ACSs.

Background And Purpose: Plants are crucial habitats for fungus communities as they provide an appropriate physical environment for the growth and reproduction of the yeast microbiome. Varieties of pathogenic and non-pathogenic yeast could be found in trees. Although species are the most common pathogenic yeasts associated with trees, other yeasts also grow on trees and are critical to human health.

This study investigates the effect of maceration and different winemaking techniques on the species diversity of yeasts in white wines from the Slovak Tokay wine region, known for its traditional white wine production. Lipovina grape variety samples were divided into three groups: control (C), macerated (M) and macerated with the addition of a yeast culture (MY). During the entire fermentation process, quantitative and qualitative microbiological analyses of the raw material and must samples were carried out, which resulted in the identification of 60 yeast isolates via the API 20 C AUX biochemical test and MALDI-TOF MS.

Ribosomes are macromolecular RNA-protein complexes that constitute the central machinery responsible for protein synthesis and quality control in the cell. Ribosomes also serve as a hub for multiple non-ribosomal proteins and RNAs that control protein synthesis. However, the purification of ribosomes and associated factors for functional and structural studies requires a large amount of starting biological material and a tedious workflow.

Fungi of Great Salt Lake, Utah, USA: a spatial survey.

Front Fungal Biol

September 2024

Great Salt Lake Institute, Westminster University, Salt Lake City, UT, United States.

The natural system at Great Salt Lake, Utah, USA was augmented by the construction of a rock-filled railroad causeway in 1960, creating two lakes at one site. The north arm is sequestered from the mountain snowmelt inputs and thus became saturated with salts (250-340 g/L). The south arm is a flourishing ecosystem with moderate salinity (90-190 g/L) and a significant body of water for ten million birds on the avian flyways of the western US who engorge themselves on the large biomass of brine flies and shrimp.
