Aim: To carry out an audit of the appropriateness of fresh-frozen plasma (FFP) and platelets (Plt) transfusion with reference to the Australian National Health and Medical Research Council/Australian Society of Blood Transfusion Clinical Practice Guidelines, and to assess the impact of a self-educating transfusion request form.
Methods: A prospective review of the clinical indications and laboratory data in all transfusion episodes of FFP and Plt occurring in a tertiary teaching hospital in South Australia in two 2-month periods of the years 2002 and 2003.
Results: Reversal of warfarin has emerged as the major indication to transfuse FFP (34%). More than 72% FFP and 88% Plt were prescribed in an appropriate manner, and the majority were monitored adequately. The transfusion request form further improved the appropriate uses and was met with a satisfactory compliance. Further grounds for improvement are in FFP usage by the haematology unit and in cardiac bypass surgery, and Plt by surgical units.
Conclusion: Clinical transfusion audit helps to identify current pattern of usage and areas of improvement. A self-educating transfusion specific request form is also beneficial.

Background: Abortion-related complications significantly contribute to maternal morbidity and mortality globally. Post-abortion care (PAC) services are essential to safeguarding women's rights by substantially mitigating the health risks associated with abortions - a step which is fundamental to achieving reproductive and maternal health-related Sustainable Development Goals.
Methods: We conducted a secondary analysis of data from the nationally representative Service Provision Assessment (SPA) surveys conducted between 2015 and 2024 across three regions in seven low- and middle-income countries: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Ethiopia, Senegal, and Haiti.

Background and objective RhD variants show altered D antigen expression, affecting their serological detection. Proper identification is crucial due to potential anti-D antibody formation. This study aimed to retrospectively analyze the frequency and characteristics of D variant cases encountered during RhD typing in both blood donors and recipients and the transfusion implications.

In the third week of November 2024, a critical incident involving the refusal of a blood transfusion was reported at our hospital. The case involved a 65-year-old Indian patient who had been admitted for a proposed stoma closure surgery. Although the healthcare team deemed an urgent blood transfusion necessary as part of the patient's treatment plan, the transfusion was refused due to misinformation from the patient's attendants regarding the patient's original blood type.

Background: Plasma-derived medicines (PDMs) are essential for treating various disorders and require large volumes of human plasma. The debate on voluntary and compensated plasma donation continues, while WHO advocating for voluntary donations. This study examines factors influencing plasma donation, focusing on the effectiveness of voluntary donation and identifying key motivators and barriers.
