Objective: To test the hypothesis that patients with pediatric bipolar disorder (PBPD) would demonstrate impairment relative to diagnosis-free controls of comparable age, gender, and IQ on measures of memory functioning.

Method: The authors administered a battery of verbal and visuospatial memory tests to 35 outpatients with PBPD and 20 healthy controls who participated as volunteers in this study. Groups did not differ on age, gender, or IQ.

Results: Consistent with findings in adults with BPD, patients with PBPD performed more poorly than controls on measures of verbal learning/memory and delayed facial recognition memory. Impaired memory was particularly evident in patients with comorbid PBPD/attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder or acute mood symptoms.

Conclusions: These findings suggest that deficits in verbal learning and memory, as well as some aspects of visuospatial memory, characterize patients with narrow phenotype PBPD. Further research is needed, however, to clarify the roles of comorbid attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and acute mood state in the emergence of these deficits. Given the apparent continuity in memory dysfunction between adult BPD and narrow phenotype PBPD, research aimed at elucidating underlying neural mechanisms for this set of deficits is warranted.

A tribute to Laszlo Zaborszky: pioneering discoveries in the basal forebrain and inspiring generations of neuroscientists.

Brain Struct Funct

School of Medicine, Department of Neuropharmacology, Western Sydney University, Locked Bag 1797, Penrith, NSW, 2751, Australia.

This editorial celebrates the 80th birthday of Distinguished Professor Laszlo Zaborszky, co-founder of Brain Structure and Function, and reflects on his monumental contributions to neuroscience, particularly his pioneering work on the cholinergic basal forebrain. Professor Zaborszky's research has reshaped our understanding of this brain region's organization and function, uncovering its critical role in cognitive processes such as learning, memory, and attention. His findings have challenged longstanding assumptions, demonstrating that the cholinergic projections to the cortex are highly organized, with implications for neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's.

The β-site amyloid precursor protein-cleaving enzyme 1 (BACE1) gene polymorphism (rs638405) has been widely reported to be associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD) risk. However, studies on the relationship between BACE1 gene polymorphism (rs638405), brain volume, and cognition in AD patients remain scarce. To investigate the effect of genetic polymorphism in BACE1 on gray matter volume (GMV) and cognition in AD, this study recruited 111 cognitively unimpaired (CU) controls and 144 AD patients.

Moving beyond word frequency based on tally counting: AI-generated familiarity estimates of words and phrases are an interesting additional index of language knowledge.

This study investigates the potential of large language models (LLMs) to estimate the familiarity of words and multi-word expressions (MWEs). We validated LLM estimates for isolated words using existing human familiarity ratings and found strong correlations. LLM familiarity estimates performed even better in predicting lexical decision and naming performance in megastudies than the best available word frequency measures.

Influenza virus infections are a serious danger to people's health worldwide as they are responsible for seasonal flu outbreaks. There is an urgent need to improve the effectiveness and durability longevity of the immune response to influenza vaccines. We synthesized the CpG HP021 and examined the impact of it on the immune response to an influenza vaccine.

Although antiretroviral therapy (ART) has dramatically improved the outlook of the HIV/AIDS pandemic, people living with HIV (PLWH) on suppressive therapy are still at higher risk for a range of comorbidities including cardiovascular disease (CVD) and HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND), among others. Chronic inflammation and immune activation are thought to be an underlying cause of these comorbidities. Many of the factors thought to drive chronic inflammation and immune activation in HIV overlap with factors known to induce trained immunity.
