Purpose: To examine whether, as has been reported in the literature, a history of otitis media (OM) affects the success of probing and irrigation (P&I) for nasolacrimal duct obstruction (NLDO).

Methods: All patients who underwent P&I at the Saint Louis University Eye Institute between 2001 and 2002 were prospectively studied. A preoperative questionnaire assessed the laterality of NLDO and history and laterality of OM. Intraoperatively, site of NLDO and recovery of fluorescein were recorded. The success of the probing was determined by follow-up interview 6 months postoperatively.

Results: Overall success of initial P&I was 86.2%. Patients with OM did not have a statistically significant decrease in success of P&I ( P = 1.00, RR 0.920, 95% CI 0.298-2.736 by Yates-corrected chi-square). The failure rate of initial P&I was not statistically different regardless of fluorescein recovery. NLDO occurred most frequently at the valve of Hasner (45.8%).

Conclusions: OM was not a risk factor for initial P&I failure. Omission of fluorescein irrigation to assess patency may save time and cost.

Economic losses in cattle farms are frequently associated with failed pregnancies. Some studies found that the transcriptomic profiles of blood and endometrial tissues in cattle with varying pregnancy outcomes display discrepancies even before artificial insemination (AI) or embryo transfer (ET). In the study, 330 samples from seven distinct sources and two tissue types were integrated and divided into two groups based on the ability to establish and maintain pregnancy after AI or ET: P (pregnant) and NP (nonpregnant).

Background: A small number of reviews have explored lower- versus higher-volume training in non-athletes, but the growing challenge of congested schedules in team sports highlights the need to synthesize evidence specific to team sport athletes. Thus, the objectives of this systematic review with meta-analysis are twofold: (i) to summarize the primary physiological and physical fitness outcomes of lower-volume versus higher-volume training interventions in team sports players; and (ii) to compare the effects of lower-volume training with higher, considering the training modalities used.

Methods: We conducted searches across key databases, including PubMed, Scopus, SPORTDiscus, and Web of Science.

High dose aflibercept treatment in naive neovascular age-related macular degeneration.

Int Ophthalmol

January 2025

Beyoglu Eye Training and Research Hospital, University of Health Sciences, Bereketzade Camii Sk. No:2 Beyoğlu, 34421, Istanbul, Turkey.

Background: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of intravitreal injections of 4 mg (high dose) of aflibercept in treatment-naive patients with neovascular AMD(nAMD) with treat and extend(TREX) dosing regimens, and to determine the frequency of injections.

Methods: In this interventional, retrospective study a total of 15 eyes of 14 patients (eight female and 9 male) with nAMD were included. All patients were examined and OCT imaging was performed at the time of initial presentation, on the day of each injection and at subsequent follow-up visits.

Groundnut fodder was utilized as a bioresource for the production of cellulases through solid state fermentation (SSF). Aspergillus unguis was initially grown on modified groundnut fodder for cellulase production and the fodder was hydrolyzed by the crude cellulase extract into fermentable hydrolyzate. The highest titer of Filter paperase (FPase), Carboxymethyl cellulase (CMCase), β-glucosidase, and protein content were found to be 11.

Factors associated with the time of glaucoma-related adverse events onset after pediatric cataract surgery and the preferred anti-glaucomatous surgical selection.

Int Ophthalmol

January 2025

Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science, Eye and ENT Hospital, Shanghai Medical College, Fudan University, 83 Fenyang Road, Shanghai, 200031, China.

Purpose: To describe the clinical characteristics of glaucoma-related adverse events (GRAE) after pediatric cataract surgery. More importantly, to identify the factors associated with the time of GRAE onset and the preferred anti-glaucomatous surgical procedure for this disease.

Methods: Hospitalized medical records of patients who developed GRAE, which include glaucoma and glaucoma suspect, after pediatric cataract surgery (surgical age ≤ 14 years) between 1994 and 2021 were retrospectively reviewed.
